It may have been my mistake, but to my mind, I had ordered giant alliums, and these are not giant at all. They are very pretty, very strong on their stems and bloom for a significant amount of time. It would be fun to figure out if they could be preserved and sprayed as decorations.

Merchant Response

Thank you for the feedback on your Purple Sensation Alliums. The blooms are about 4" in diameter, so they are not giant alliums. However, once they are done blooming you could definitely spray paint the blooms to enjoy them longer in your garden.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Bright, long-lasting and whimsical!

From Zone 7a

I planted these to bridge the gap between the last of my tulips and the beginning of the daylilies, and I'm very pleased with the results. 'Purple Sensation' bloomed for just over a month, and the tall, whimsical blooms held up well against both wind and rain. Even after the purple from each tiny floret disappeared, the remaining green flower stalks still looked quite ornamental, so I left them up for a couple additional weeks. It's worth co-planting these with something that will bush out by May/June to cover their foliage, which looks a bit scraggly as it dies back - daylilies work beautifully. Because many of the bulbs put up more than one flower stalk, it was hard to count to tell what percentage bloomed, but I believe it was very high.

Spring planting only!

I love my alliums and am glad for my neighbors that they don't have a strong onion smell. However, none of the bulbs I planted in the fall have bloomed. I planted several a month ago and they have all bloomed.

Amazing!

Submitted 2 years ago

By Debbie

From Bend, OR

I am not a gardener. I bought these bulbs on a whim to spruce up my new home in Bend, Oregon, which is very green. I wanted to add some color and as a purple person, these Allium Gladiators did NOT disappoint. They are tall. They are strong (withstood a pretty significant hail storm and winds). And have the most amazing sphere of flowers. I am so excited with this outcome that I am purchasing more to plant in other areas of my yard. And the best part, all I did was plant them in October and they starting growing in April without much, or if any, intervention on my part.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend
