One of the best flowers I've ever planted.

Submitted 2 months ago

By Janet

From Indiana, PA

I ordered a few of these a decade or so ago. Now they are all over my flower garden, and I'm grateful because they don't interfere with the spring or summer garden. They appear and quickly bloom just at the time bulbs are finishing and camouflage the dying bulb foliage. Their gorgeous shade of blue is rare and goes with almost any flower or foliage. Also a great cut flower. When the blooms have finished, they hang on just long enough for their seeds to drop and sometimes take flight. Then they disappear beneath the ground without disturbing your carefully planned early summer picks. Note where you have planted them and take a photo of the unusual rhizome lest your garden helpers mistake them for something that should go on the compost heap.

I planted ten of these bulbs last autumn. I also bought a Virginia bluebell plant from a native nursery nearby. I put the bulbs in the ground and planted the plant near them in one area. I placed flags to indicate where the burbs were and the little marker from the nursery to show where the plant was. This year not one bluebell from the bulbs showed up. Only the live plant retuned. Buying them from here was a waste of money and effort.

I ordered one set to see how they would grow in the location I had chosen. Every single one came up and 3 actually bloomed. I know they will spread, but I will still plant more this fall.

All of them grew

I ordered the set of 10 bluebells in the late winter with shipping in early spring. I was skeptical when they arrived and looked like root fragments and not a clump of roots for each plant. Well, they all grew stems and leaves with about half displaying bluebells. I understand that they might bloom until the second year as been documented in the past when reading about these plants. The old saying is '"The first year they sleep, the second year they creep, and the third year they leap". To the people whose plants did not grow, it is my recommendation is to buy late winter, early spring to get plants that have not sat around for months drying out. I have always had great success with this company when buying in the winter and getting plants early in the spring.

I want more

These are beautiful and bloom in mid-spring here in the Southeast. They do spread although slowly. Some bug eats the leaves at the end of the bloom period, but this year I will try snail and/or slug prevention. The root stock is hard to see in the shipping medium, and they are very hard to find once planted. Be sure to mark them well and renew the label as needed when they are in bloom!

Worth the Wait

Virginia Bluebells are 'surprise' plants. The roots are small, dark and hard to distinguish from the shipping medium. I garden in Zone 7, and planted some in shade and some in part shade. The ones with more sun have done better. The first year I saw a few leaves and nothing else. But the second year was beautiful, and some have even started spreading.

All of the Virginia blue bells seemed to be very healthy and of good stock. It's only been 2 weeks since planting but some are already poking thru the dirt and are looking good. I may be buying more...

Do NOT plant in full sun !

Submitted 9 years ago

By Lrd

From USA

Irresponsible of this company to reccomend you plant VA bluebells in full sun just to make a sale. They would be sure to die as they are a shady woodland plant. Instead put them around the shady damp edge of a pond or in moist forest soil and they will do fine

Q
Good Morning… I have a very large wooded area that has Bluebells. I'd like to fill out areas that they have not "spread" to yet. Spacing for a border can be quite different than a wooded area. I can you your plant calculator… but not sure about spacing. What would you recommend ? Thanks in advance
Asked by CLC
Verified Reply - AngelaThe mature spread of the Virginia Bluebells is 12 to 18 inches regardless of where they are planted. If you want to fill in gaps, then I would stick to spacing them 12 to 18 inches apart in the gaps. If you have larger areas to cover, dig a larger hole and plant 3 or 5 bulbs spaced about 5 inches apart. Then plant another group about 2 to 3 feet apart. This will produce small clumps immediately and they can easily spread 2 to 3 feet to meet the next one. I hope that is helpful. I think I'll consider putting some in my woods this year! Was this answer helpful to you
