The Bartzella Itoh Peony is known for its huge, sunny yellow double blooms which makes it a standout in perennial gardens and foundation plantings. Growing 32" tall, the Bartzella Peony can produce up to 50 blooms in mid to late spring. Peony flowers are treasured as cut flowers for bouquets and floral arrangements. Bartzella Peony attracts pollinators, too. Itoh Peonies are a cross between exotic tree peonies and perennial herbaceous peonies. With its attractive, deep green foliage, Bartzella is also suitable for planting in groups as small hedges. It performs best in full sun to partial shade. Deer tend to avoid it.

I got this today. It comes one month later than expected. The root has no eyes on and feels very soft. Looks like startin g composting already. I plant it anyway just wish it will germinate next spring.

With patience it will not disappoint

I have had my plant for 10 years now. It arrived as a small root with 2 eyes. It was small and unassuming the first 2 years, the 3rd year it bloomed for the first time. I am a peony lover with over 20 different varieties, this is by far my favorite and the most beautiful. I wish I would have planted more! With patience it will become a beautiful addition to your garden! Mine loves the east side of our house, it is over 3 feet tall and wide.

Large, quality root

Submitted 4 years ago

By Max

From Denver

Good size root compared to other peonies I've purchased from this company in the past with several healthy eyes. One of the larger feeder roots had some rot and had to be cut off to ensure it didn't spread so I removed one star. Hopeful it will survive the first winter and I'll get flowers in the next couple years! This root was comparable in size to another specialty peony shop I ordered from which was good to see.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Packed well and arrived in reasonable time. One tuber looked a little suspect, but we'll wait for spring to see what comes of it.

Q
How long before I see plentiful blooms?
Asked by Joey
Verified Reply - AngelaIt may take up to three years for your Bartzella Peony to fully bloom. Once they start, they bloom reliably for decades. It's worth the wait. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Should the seed pods be removed after blooming?
Asked by BettyAnn
Verified Reply - ViciIt is always beneficial to remove the flowers after blooming so that the energy of the plant will go to the roots to feed the plant for next year instead of using its energy to produce seed pods. It will not harm the plant if you choose to leave the pods on the plant as they do look nice. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
I live in zone 8b, it said in the growing guide, it grows to zone 8. Will I be able to grow this peony here, as I've never been able to grow peonies here in Texas.
Asked by Debbie
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Itoh Peony Bartzella is suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8. You are at the very edge of the heat spectrum where the plant can grow. I would suggest planting the bareroot no more than an inch beneath the soil level. A planting site with about 5-6 hours of early sun and afternoon shade will also be helpful. Mulch around the plant to help retain moisture and it should be happy. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Can this Peony be transplanted in the fall? Mine is full-grown in one spot.
Asked by Jim
Verified Reply - ViciMoving established peony plants should be done in the fall, at least six weeks before the ground freezes. This gives the plant time to recover before going dormant for the winter. Was this answer helpful to you
