Striking

Very striking flower with color that pops. Stem is fragile so don't let your pets near them in the garden. Would have rated higher, but only about 70% of bulbs bloomed.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

By SAKUYA HANA

From Annapolis Maryland

After - still continues Deer business to ate up so many new leaf and flower buds of plants, shrubs and flower trees, I had many spots without color which looks sad and depressing. When I planted those Dutch iris in beginning of spring, I didn't expected to have any blooms this year. But SURPRISE!! In May, the flowers showed up and filled very pretty colors on those bare spots!! I am going to plant them again! !

True blue

I bought 100 bulbs, it's very beautiful I will buy some more but for sure no planting in pots or do any force blooming in pots like no soil or very shallow plantings. It rots easily. It must be buried at least 4 inches in the ground. A few come up. But it's ok. I got refunded and try other plants. I will try it this fall again.

Nice (but wrong) flowers

Submitted 2 years ago

By Matt

From Chicago, IL

I ordered these as a Christmas present for my aunt who loves to garden. Ended up getting pink tulips instead (she didn't tell me they weren't Irises at the time so I didn't feel bad). Once I saw them grown I realized I got the wrong thing. They do get two stars because at least the tulips are nice, but wrong flower received.

Very striking second season

Submitted 4 years ago

By Gardener Gary...Not!

From Goshen, Indiana

Planted 50 bulbs fall of 2019. They flowered wonderfully late spring of '20. After leaves and stems browned I removed them. We had some warm days in late fall and early winter and they pushed leaves again, no blooms. Never really died back through the winter. Our zone 5/6 is in northern Indiana. Just now in late spring '21, blooms have broken out strikingly and with stronger and taller stems/leaves. Very happy to also get all 50 back!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Some bulbs rotted but still hopeful

Submitted 4 years ago

By WesternMass Gardener

From 01026

Planted in zone 5 fall of 2020. I am so looking forward to seeing these bloom, but shoots started to come out too early during a bout of freakish warm winter weather and maybe that did them in. Now that it's spring those same shoots are still there but brown from being killed off in the cold. However, I was able to easily pull on them and they came out, and the end seemed sort of slimy so I pulled up the bulb and it was all mush. A few shoots still seemed intact plus there were 25 bulbs in the bag, so I am hopeful I will see some of these flowers this year.

Q&A

Showing 10 out of 27 Questions

Q
are Irises poisonous to cats?
Asked by bonnie
Verified Reply - ViciIris poisoning occurs when your cat ingests any part of the iris, though the worst part for them to eat is the bulb and rhizomes, as these are where more of the toxic components are. Although not very toxic, they can cause extreme discomfort in your cat and can result in more serious problems if left untreated. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Just received my bulbs, Evenings have reached freezing but there will be a warm up this week, ok to still plant now?
Asked by Bob
Verified Reply - AngelaPlease go right ahead and plant your Dutch Iris Sapphire Beauty bulbs now. They don't care if it's cold if they are nestled in the ground. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Will they come back next year?
Asked by Sierra
Verified Reply - AngelaDutch Irises are perennial. They will need relatively dry soil during the dormant period to return. Remove the spent flower head after blooming and allow the foliage and stalk to die back naturally rather than cutting. We suggest mulching heavily in winter for northern gardens. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I need to plant bulbs in mid-August....we are only in Michigan mid-June - mid-August. What would you recommend? I have a garden with afternoon full sun. I would like to get a nice perennial garden going! The soil is quite sandy, but I will add other dirt when I plant. I'd love a nice variety of flowers / colors and heights. Thanks for any suggestions or for recommendations on where I can further investigate. I'm new to gardening.
Asked by Amy
Verified Reply - AngelaIt will be difficult for us to ship fall bulbs to Michigan in August. You can plant Daffodils, Tall bearded Irises and Alliums that would all bloom in the spring before you arrived in June. Reblooming Dayliles, Catmint, Coneflowers and Hardy Geraniums would by my first suggestions. They are hardy, have extended blooming and appear later in the spring/summer.Was this answer helpful to you
Q

Can they be planted in pots
Asked by David

Q
Can I plant them in pots and leave them in the potted soil in my garage or even in the pots outdoors in zone 5a? Will they survive this way until I can plant them outdoors in the ground in Spring 2023? Or, can I save the bulbs in the delivered bag until outdoor planting in Spring 2023? I don't know if I can plant them outdoors before December 22/Official Winter? Snow arrived yesterday. Thanks. Sincerely, M. Craig
Asked by NYS
Verified Reply - AngelaYou can plant the Dutch Iris Sapphire Beauty bulbs as long as the soil is not frozen. Snow is actually a good insulator. You can also plant them in pots and store them in the unheated garage for winter. Just give them a little water about once a month to keep the soil from drying completely. Don't leave the pots outside or the bulbs could freeze. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Are these fragrant? And isn't too late in the season for irises to get established in the ground for next summer's growth in zone 5?
Asked by DonMichUp
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Dutch Iris Sapphire Beauty flowers are not fragrant. It's not too late to plant these in your zone. Dutch Iris are bulbs and can be planted as long as the ground is not frozen. Was this answer helpful to you
