Allium atropurpureum

Allium atropurpureum

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Heirloom variety makes a dramatic statement with 3" showy umbels of deep reddish-purple florets atop 34-36" sturdy stems. When planted with daffodils and tulips, Allium atropurpureum draws the eye away from fading bulb foliage. It also attracts butterflies and other pollinators when it blooms from May to June. For the best effect, plant allium bulbs in groups. Like other allium, Allium atropurpureum makes an excellent cut flower. It's easy to grow in well-drained soil, will tolerate poor garden soil and naturalizes well. Deer tend to avoid.

These grew well with about 75% of the bulbs sprouting. Nice sturdy stems held up to the winds without trouble. Beautiful flower that is sure to stand out in any setting.

Pretty, shorter bloom time than other alliums

Submitted 8 months ago

By Flower maximalist

From Zone 7a

Pretty - small flower heads with a purple color that trended a little more toward maroon than the picture showed. They bloomed for about 2 weeks, shorter than other alliums I'd planted, though admittedly I put them in a location where they do get part shade in the afternoon, which may have harmed their performance.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Slightly disappointed

I'm not sure if the picture in the catalog was a close up or the flowers failed to thrive. I followed directions on spacing and bulb depth. Included compost. But few bulbs came up.

Great pop of color

Submitted 4 years ago

By Deb

From Oak Island, NC

I planted these in the late fall of 2020; some in pots, some in the ground. The ones in the ground were beautiful! Not much luck with the potted ones - I'm learning about Alliums. These really do need full sun, for their best performance. The only thing that was disappointing was the 'eye' color in the center of each little flower. The picture shows a dark blue, mine were green. Not a big enough deal to keep me from recommending it. A great choice!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Reliable Grower

Submitted 5 years ago

By Michelle

From Ohio

I've had this allium since 2017 (planted in Fall 2017) and it has bloomed in the late-spring ever since then. Very reliable grower every year. Small flower head, but pretty.
