Crocosmia Lucifer

Crocosmia Lucifer

67%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Non-demanding bulbs deliver fiery red color year after year. Crocosmia Lucifer features tubular flowers that hummingbirds love. The name comes from the Greek language and means "saffron smell," which reportedly can be detected when dried flowers are submerged in water. Growing 4' tall with deep green leaves, the brilliantly colored red flowers bloom in July-August. The wiry stems make them ideal for cut flowers. Plant in full sun to part shade among your perennials. Crocosmia bulbs will come back each year.

Year After Year of Reliable Blooms

Submitted 2 years ago

By dkumpula

From Fort Mill, SC

I've planted these in several locations and soil types in South Carolina. They are reliable and easy to care for. Their blooms are pleasant and the hummingbirds absolutely love them. The strappy foliage remains deep green until frost. They are easy to clean-up in Winter.

Had to put in planters since my beds aren't ready. Only 5 have come up. Not good so far. Thought others would have already come up with the others. Arrived with some mold I guess it is. Have to wait and see and if they flower

Love these beauties

I planted a few and they took off I have beautiful flowers till late in the fall. I have never dug mine up i do nothing and in earth summer I rake off the dead leaves and stems from the previous summer and they come up again. I have found the spread so you need to pull the ones that come up where you don't want them. I think if left alone they could overtake your flower garden

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Started in pots in spring then moved spikes 2 garden in June

Submitted 3 years ago

By Cathie

From Aurora, Colorado - Southlands Area

I live in zone 5b, Colorado. Bought pkg. 25, started in plastic nursery pots in spring, and then transplanted spikes to garden in June; heavily mulching the beds. I had no issue with almost all bulbs coming up, and some were very small! The big thing was paying attention to the instructions and planting them with the bulb in the correct position. They are tricky because they look almost the same on top as they do on the bottom. Pay close attention and you will have success in planting. In addition, it was about 5 weeks before I saw them pop through the top of the soil. I do suggest pots first and you then know you are getting what you paid for and can also baby them. Do not saturate them, nor let them dry out. Some relief from the afternoon sun also seemed to help. Now they are in the ground and seem to be doing well. I will check back and leave an update closer to late fall. I left this same review for the Crocosmia mix; check those out too!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Perplexed

Submitted 3 years ago

By Luella

From Pendleton, IN

I had these crocrosmia at a former home and loved them. They were care free (no lifting) and the hummingbirds loved them, so purchased some in spring 2021 for our new (to us) home. I got lots of leaf growth last season, but not a single bloom. As with the ones at the old house, I did not lift them this winter (zone 6a), so we will see how they do this coming season. I gave this 3 stars because they did grow, and I have not given up hope they will be firmly established and bloom in 2022.

Do. well in Maine

Submitted 3 years ago

By N in Maine

From Kennebunkport, Maine

Have increased these in my garden over 5 years. They bloom well, have multiplied, and the hummingbirds love them. Lucifer grows best for me. I do not lift in fall and they overwinter well even in my zone (5B). Woodchucks and deer leave them alone.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Ordered these red then also yellow and orange

Submitted 3 years ago

By Alix

From Palo Alto, Ca.

The shorter ones are all orange no yellow / 100% yield. The tall red - only 5 red the rest orange / 50% yield - not a great success. I was disappointed that the colors were not right - also the batch yielded only 50%. I wanted variety which didn't happen. This was from 3 groups of 25 bulbs ea. I would not order these again much as I love Crocosomia.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Q
I'm in zone 6a looking for bulbs that are perennials and deer resistant I'm disappointed these crocodilians are not. Any suggestions?
Asked by Mich
Verified Reply - AngelaAllium, Daffodils, Hyacinths, Grape Hyacinths, Liatris, Echinops, Hellebores, Hardy Gladiolus, Lily of the Valley and Red Hot Poker are all perennial in your zone and considered deer resistant. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
If I don't have a frost free area where can I plant them so they will grow back?
Asked by Cynthia
Verified Reply - AngelaYou will want to dig up the bulbs and store them in peat moss or sand in a garage or cool basement. If you grow Crocosmia in a pot, you can move the dormant potted plant into the garage without digging them up. They won't need sun and just light water about once a month. You will just be trying to keep the soil from drying out completely. In the spring, replant the bulbs or move the pot outside and resume regular watering once grow appears. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Does the foliage remain green year-round? Or does it go away after blooming until the next bloom season?

Q
I will use 14-gallon planters filled with my basic soilless planting mixture. Coco-Coir, Black-Kow, Perlite, Vermiculite, & aged wood chips. !!!!! I'm confused about what fertilizer & how to apply it !!!!!.
Asked by Uncle Larry
Verified Reply - ViciCrocosmia grows well in lean or rocky soils and doesn't need supplemental fertilizer. Excessive nutrients can cause an overgrowth of foliage at the expense of the blooms. Was this answer helpful to you
