Double Peony Mixed

Double Peony Mixed

67%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Coming in a random mix of pink, red and white blooms, this double peony mix is hardy, fragrant, long-lived, and rarely need dividing. As a bonus, peonies are superior as cut flowers—it's no wonder they're considered "The Queen of Garden Flowers!" Great as focal points in a perennial bed, for hedges or in a spot of their own. Very low care and high performance.

I ordered 25 of these four years ago. I ordered the mixture but they ended up all being the same which is fine with me. This was the third year of bloom for them. All but one plant sprouted.

Very large plants first year

Submitted 3 years ago

By Venus

From Colorado Springs, CO

No blooms yet, but the plants are very large for what I expected this first year! I was concerned at first as there was some mold on one root when it arrived, so I peeled off the mold and trimmed a mushy root. Surprisingly, it was the first plant to spring up, and boy did they spring up so fast! Only one slow one, it took a month and a half to come up, but the results are what is important to me, and I am very happy with these peony plants. I live in high elevation midwest, with severe UV, I get exactly half a day of sun on them, and it seems perfect for them. Would buy again, recommended!

Love Double Peonies!

Submitted 3 years ago

By Minnesota woodswoman

From Near Canadian border

I ordered 2 bags of 5 peony roots. Out of the 10, 2 of them looked dead & never produced. DutchBulbs took care of me with a refund for some of them, great customer service! Now I have 8 plants all looking pretty healthy & though they don't usually flower the first year, at least 4-5 of them have a small bud. One took "forever" to show above ground but now it is challenging the size of the others. Filled in the 2 empty spots with some annual cheap marigolds for now. Will be getting more peonies next spring, of course from this same company.

Healthy stock

Submitted 3 years ago

By Bee Girl

From Syracuse, NY

I thought I was taking a chance by buying these at the end of the spring planting season but I was thrilled (and relieved!) to see how healthy they were upon arrival even after the shipment was delayed a couple days. Many had 5+ eyes on them - MUCH better than expected! There was only one "dud" in the 20 that I ordered but I figure it evens out. Plus, it may not have eyes now but I am going to plant it just the same. I already planted 16 of the 20 after soaking them for a few hours first. Not expecting much this season or next, but I will post again in a year or 2 with the results. If they don't come up, I can't fault the seller as they were in phenomenal condition upon arrival!

Two are growing, 3 never sprouted

Submitted 3 years ago

By Green Thumb

From Chattanooga, TN

I soaked all of the Peony sections overnight then planted each in a separate pot to get them started before being planting in the landscape. Two sprouted leaves and are about 9" tall, three have not sprouted and after 4 months I dug them out of the pots & they are dead. I called customer service & you don't/can't speak to anyone at the company, as they are just people answering phones in a call center. They don't know anything about the process or reimbursement for dead plants. When I asked if they would have someone from the company call me, they said they couldn't. This is very disappointing.

Planting with an eye to the future

Submitted 3 years ago

By Luella

From Pendleton, IN

I ordered 25 of these mixed peonies in spring 2021. All but one did well for first year plants, and got perhaps 12-14" tall. No blooms last year, but I may get some this year. I think the one that did not thrive just got too dry and hot in the location I planted it. Please be patient with these plants. You get dormant root stock so they take a couple years to get established and start blooming, but once they do they will live for 50+ years. If you want plants that will bloom immediately, go to the greenhouse and pay 5x as much. It's really about whether you want blooms now, or can let them grow.

High Quality Bare Roots, Excellent Value

Submitted 4 years ago

By First Time Peony Planter

From Zone 5b Midwest

Zone 5b. Peony roots arrived in great condition in early November 2020. Upon arrival, I soaked the roots in water for a few hours. I've done this with all bare roots I buy which helps to rehydrate them after their postal journey. I didn't know where exactly to plant yet so I put them in pots and buried the pots over winter (one blue pot had two roots), protected by leaves and a good layer of snow. All survived and came up in early spring. Nearly all of the 5 had teeny buds formed, but with cold temperatures in early spring this year (2021), all buds were blasted except one even though I tried to protect them in the garage. No worries; all 5 plants have healthy green leaves. In the picture with the pots along the sidewalk, they are the 5 along the top. The one bud that bloomed was a dark pink/fuchsia that looked single, but we had some very rainy weather that could have affected the bloom. And it's still just a baby. I'm guessing it's a Karl Rosenfield and will double up nicely in the coming years. I've already placed an order for fall bulbs, hoping they are the same great quality. I would definitely recommend K Van Bourgondien and would buy again.

Q
If I were to put these in a pot, could I keep them in the garage over the winter for protection? Or can I keep them outside and just put mulch on the top layer of the pot? If there are in the garage, do they need sunlight during the day to ensure growth for them to bloom in the spring? Thank you!
Asked by Kelsey
Verified Reply - AngelaYou can grow Peonies in a pot that has adequate drainage. We suggest moving the pot to an unheated garage for winter protection. They will not require sunlight. You will need to lightly water them about once a month. You are just trying to keep the soil from drying out completely. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Do any of your Peonies grow in zone 9? I understand they need a cold Winter, what is the minimum temperature they require to bloom well the following Spring? I am hoping to plant them in a beach house in zone 9, where the low temps range between 7℃ and 17℃. Sometimes, at night there are light freezes.
Asked by Carina
Verified Reply - AngelaGenerally, peonies need at least 500 chill hours in order to bloom. We have a few new Itoh Peonies that are suggested for zone 9. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/product/caroline-constabel-itoh-peony https://www.dutchbulbs.com/product/belle-toulousaine-itoh-peonyWas this answer helpful to you

Can these be planted in a flower pot instead of the ground to get started to grow? Or if I have to move, are they easy to uproot and move to another location?
Asked by Kelsey
Verified Reply - ViciYou can plant these in a flower pot instead of in the ground. I would use at least a 20 inch pot that is about as deep. You would need to either insulate the pot or move it into an unheated shed or garage in the coldest part of the winter. Was this answer helpful to you
