Japanese Iris Ice Cream

Japanese Iris Ice Cream

A sweet way to round out a border or garden bed, generous plantings of Ice Cream Japanese Dinnerplate Iris make excellent conversation starters as well as creative and colorful displays. Boasting a massive 6" size, the creamy white blooms have soft blue accents and bright yellow centers. And though they share the same classic flower form as traditional iris ensata, the similarity ends there. That's because Ice Cream's blooms are nearly twice the size of typical garden-variety Japanese cultivars, giving them a leg up in borders, garden beds and cut-flower arrangements. Customers with moist soil sites will love Ice Cream's performance and versatility, too. Plant them near water features or along the edge of a pond. They naturalize nicely, returning yearly with greater vigor and increased bloom.

A Happy Accident

Submitted 10 months ago

By Donna from Dallas

Thanks so much for sending a Japanese Iris, the beauty of which knocks my socks off! I was expecting a pale blue Ice Cream variety but received instead a startlingly stunning Purple variety with delicate white veining. I plant Japanese Iris in any of the damp spots in my garden, and this unexpected beauty was a lovely surprise in a spot where several plants had died due to intolerance for damp soil! Please keep stocking Japanese varieties, I have another damp spot to fill, and your healthy bulbs thrive in my garden.

Nothing Like What Is Advertised!

Purchased 3 years back and have had blooms for 2 seasons. Color is dark purple (nothing "Creamy White" about it) and the size/form is more Louisiana Flag Iris vs. Japanese Iris.

Q
How many flowers per stem? Do you have to plant multiple to group blooms?
Asked by John
Verified Reply - KimberlyThese irises produce 1 to 3 flowers per stem. Established plants produce often multiple flowers per stem, younger plants often 1 to 2 flowers/stem. An established plant will form a clump with many stems/plant. You may plant multiple to achieve the group blooms you are desiring. Was this answer helpful to you
