Louisiana Iris Black Gamecock's  dark purple flowers are accented with golden yellow, creating a dramatic, elegant look in the garden and cut-flower displays. Native to the wetlands of the southern U.S., Louisiana Iris are the ideal choice for water gardens, along the edge of streams or ponds, or in other moist areas. Its green, strappy foliage looks attractive for several months. Although they originated in the Southeast, Louisiana Iris are adaptable to several climates and most are hardy to zone 4. Unlike bearded iris, they prefer moist conditions and usually do best with about an inch of water each week. Louisiana Iris Black Gamecock blooms in June-July. Deer tend to pass it by.

Immediate gratification!

Beautiful! In its very first season the plant formed a healthy clump with numerous spectacular blooms. I couldn't have asked for more from a new specimen. My first Louisiana Iris, but I hope not my last.

I planted this beauty along our creek a number of years ago. In spite of several floods, it has hung in there and gives us beautiful blooms every year. Such a rich color.

2 of 3 rhizomes were dry

Submitted 3 years ago

By W R

From Gig Harbor, WA

Two of the three rhizomes arrived dead. That's pretty bad quality control since they were light weight and papery and obviously no longer viable. Pressing on them, they just collapse like empty husks. I planted the one that was solid and looked alive. Waiting for it to come up.

OMG this is a beautiful plant!

I love that it's an evergreen so the leaves stay green throughout the winter. I planted my bulbs 2 years ago. This is the first year that I actually got flowers. It was well worth the wait!! They're so beautiful 😍. It just took my breath away when I first saw the blossoms. I planted my bulbs in ceramic pots. They like it better than the plastic planters and it seems to keep the bugs from eating the leaves. Initially that was my problem....bugs!! Not sure why, but after I transplanted them all to ceramic planters, they began to thrive and I had no more big problems. Love these so much!!
