Mixed Hellebores (Helleborus orientalis Mix)

Mixed Hellebores (Helleborus orientalis Mix)

88%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Various shades of single-flowered, cup-shaped blooms combine in this splendid mix. Flowers appear early in the year and last for weeks, attracting butterflies and bees. Because hellebores are extremely long-lived perennials, they are excellent for woodland gardens or shady borders. Plant is self-seeding.

Not worth the price

Submitted 2 years ago

By My plant life

From Warren, MI

I had 3 sprouting roots out of the 5 that came in. I amended the soil with earthworm castings, planted and waited. It's been a month and 2 out of the 5 came up. One has one single leaf, but that's still ok for a new hellebore. I paid full price for these, so NOT worth the expense for me.

Perfect for shady spots

From NYS

Arrived in great condition. We have terrible soil so I did enrich with quite a bit of potting soil and despite having to sit in the crisper drawer of my fridge for 10 days because they arrived the day before I left town, they've thrived. The lady I spoke to on the phone about what to do with the plants while I was away could not have been more helpful.

Disappointing

Bare root plants arrived not looking too great. Carefully planted them in a semi-shaded area (as I have had success with Hellebores before) but only 2 of the 5 emerged this past spring with only 1 or 2 minuscule leaves. It may take several seasons for them to bloom if they survive. Although these were not inexpensive, I would rather pay more for a potted plant with a more established root system.

Four of six plants grew, but not robust. I am hoping they survive the winter and are more robust this spring/summer. The plants that grew were the bigger ones, the smaller plants/root systems were really small to start with. Hoping for good growth this spring.

I did not think squirrels would like these.

Submitted 4 years ago

By Big Boots

From Leawood Ks.

So I don't have a lot of experience...I was unprepared for squirrels. I got the roots and they looked good. I got them planted and it took a bit for them come up. Sadly the right when the first leaves started to show, all of them got dug up by squirrels. I found one remaining set of roots flung over on the grass it was dried out and not in real good shape so I tried to replant it but I got nothing so far. I plan to reorder and try these again but with a wire cage over them until they get established.

Roots look healthy and alive

Submitted 5 years ago

By Chinnamasta

From Healdsburg, CA

I just received 20 roots. The size of some is as big as my hand, others are only a third of that. They look healthy. It is to soon to tell how they will do. I planted them right away. I hope to have flowers next year early season, I chose for hellaborus as they are one of the few flowers that blossum early in the season and are good in the shade.

Q
The spot I'm looking at for the Hellebores plants gets sun until leaves come out on the nearby trees. At that point the bed gets a little mottled sunlight until winter. Is this going to be too much sun in February and March? We're in southern Indiana, zone 5 (on the line between a and b).
Asked by Sharon
Verified Reply - AngelaThat's a great question. Hellebores do very well under the canopy of deciduous trees. They can tolerate and even benefit from the extra winter sun. The trees will shade them from the hot summer sun. It's really a perfect match. Was this answer helpful to you

When the plant get shipped in the spring will they have leaves and will they bloom the same spring after planting ?
Asked by Gloria
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Mixed Hellebores are shipped as bareroot plants with no foliage. They should grow foliage the first spring after planting but won't likely flower until at least the 2nd year after planting. Was this answer helpful to you
