When it comes to landscaping and gardening, shady sites are often overlooked. And when they are planted, it is usually with the typical shade perennials found at big box stores. That's why we are so pleased with this new, and highly unusual offering—Red Wings Shooting Star. A native wildflower, it brings style and color to the darker areas of the landscape without needing a ton of attention. Red Wings' unique flower form and chic color palette make it a natural choice for jazzing up wooded sites, bringing color to shadowed slopes and brightening sun-dappled meadows. Plus, it is just as eye-catching, if not more so, in rock gardens and shaded beds.

None of my order grew

Submitted 2 years ago

None of my order grew. I even bought a plant at a nursery so that I'd know what type of leaf it had so that I wouldn't accidentally pull them as weeds. It was pretty and seeing it blooming made it worth seeing that it was what I'd hoped for. However since non of the roots I ordered grew, I'll think twice about ordering things other than bulbs from this grower. Only four out of five of the hardy glads I ordered came up---so my batting average with this company is not good.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

All of my purchases, throughout the years from Van Bourgondien, have arrived in excellent condition, healthy and well-packaged. Be aware this plant is a teeny, tiny root. I am not familiar with this plant and decided to try it for all the reasons in the given description. You will have to plant it in a pot first to establish some growth. Given the size of the root sent, I hope I planted it well and it survives.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Very pretty and easy to grow.

The bareroot plants were tiny when they arrived, just over an inch long (half root and half unopened sprout), but they looked sturdy and they started to grow right away. Within a month three of the five plants had buds and bloomed soon after. The plants went dormant after mid-summer. I found out that they are related to Primula, which also often go dormant.

Q
Ordered and delivered. Planted upon receipt. How long does it take for them to bloom and show results?
Asked by Sherri
Verified Reply - ViciI am sorry but it doesn't look like Red Wings Shooting Star has shipped yet. It is scheduled to ship between May 9 and May 23. It could take 4 - 6 weeks for this bareroot plant to start to grow once it is planted. Bareroot plants are working the first season to establish a new plant and may not bloom until the following year. Was this answer helpful to you

Hi I received what looked like 4 red wings growing with spindly roots. They seemed very very fragile. I planted them when they arrived and they seem to have disappéared. Any advices to what to expect would be appreciated. My account number is 28728912 Thank you.
Asked by Luke
Verified Reply - AngelaRed Wings Shooting Star is likely working on establishing a root system. You may see foliage appear within the next month. The plant may bloom this year but more likely next spring. These plants go dormant in the summer heat so don't be surprised if it disappears again. They prefer moist conditions in the spring and drier soil during dormancy. Was this answer helpful to you
