The best deer resistant foliage plants

Submitted 3 years ago

By Tonya

From New York

I decided to write this review because I'm sure some people might find it helpful. So in April 2021 I received very moldy brunnera roots. The roots looked absolutely dead and I was truly disappointed. I decided to toss them in my flower bed all together (there're 3 roots in this pack) not expecting anything to happen. And nothing happened for a while. But a couple weeks later I noticed spikes with blue flowers and the foliage started to appear. By the end of the season the foliage was lush and growing wider and wider. I was able to divide it in the fall and got 10 beautiful plants. And the best part is - deer don't even want to go near it!!! THIS PLANT IS THE BEST!!! People who have a bad problem with deer traffic know how hard it is to find plants that deer won't touch. This is the winner and it keeps on giving. I hope people understand that every plant needs time to grow. Even a hosta root needs around 3-5 years to produce a good foliage bunch. Please give you plants a chance to shine, they need time to get established and show their true size and beauty.

Disappointed

Submitted 4 years ago

By D

From Panora, IA

I am very disappointed so far. Three of these arrived 4 1/2 weeks ago and were planted the same day per instructions included. None of them have shown any sign of growth yet. At this point I consider them a waste of money. That said, 4 of the 5 ferns from the same order are flourishing.

Merchant Response

Thank you for sharing your review. We were happy to hear 4 out of 5 Ferns were growing but we were sad to hear the three Brunnera Alexander's Great has failed to thrive in your garden after being planted for four and a half weeks. We are delighted to let you know we guarantee our merchandise and we will be reaching out to you with a positive resolution.

Gorgeous in Shade Garden

Submitted 4 years ago

By Garden Aueen

From Southern Missouri. Hardiness zone 6b.

This is the second year for my brunnera. All three have thrived and have have beautiful leaves and sky blue flowers. Outstanding in the shade. I would recommend marking where you want fo put your plants in the fall before you order as other shade perennials, such as hostas, will not have sprouted when you plant these roots in early spring.

I purchased the 3 Brunnera (Alexander's Great) in mid-April - shipping was expedient. After planting, all 3 have 2 white/silver leaves with green veining and this is just the end of May. I am happy with my purchase and certainly recommend.

Really took off

Submitted 5 years ago

By Suzanne JB

From KC, MO

I have to update on my last review. This plant took OFF this past summer. It is absolutely gorgeous. I am sad that part of them died in transit and never rooted, but the two that did survive are now my favorite plants in my garden. I plan on edging my entire front flower bed that is shaded by a large oak tree.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Q
I live in illinois, do I need dig out roots before winter or is ok live it in ground and cover with mulch or burlap? Do they need a lot off water?
Asked by Maria
Verified Reply - AngelaBrunnera has average water needs. You will want to water regularly but the soil should not remain wet or soggy. This plant is suggested for zones 4 to 9. Here is a link to check your growing zone by zip code. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/find_zoneWas this answer helpful to you
Q
I've read that these plants can have a very rough and prickly texture. Is that why the guy holding the plant has a mean look on his face?
Asked by Ralph
Verified Reply - AngelaBrunnera does have fine prickly hairs on the underside of the leaves. It helps to keep the deer and rabbits from munching them. The guy doesn't look mean to me. ( :Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Is brunnera deer resistant? How about squirrels? Is it a perennial or does it need to be treated as an annual? Is brunnera a suitable substitute for caladiums? I have an area that is mostly shady until late afternoon. Caladiums have done well there in past years as long as I kept chicken wire on top of them until they began to put up shoots.
Asked by Curtis
Verified Reply - AngelaBrunnera Alexander's Great is considered deer resistant. I don't think squirrels will bother them once established. They might notice a new planting and dig it up out of curiosity. You can use your chicken wire to protect them after planting. The plant is a perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. It should grow well in the your shady area. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
My was planted last year and came out without variegation, and this season also sprouted without the variegation on the leaves. It's that normal or this one is not Alexander's Great?
Asked by Ines
Verified Reply - AngelaBrunnera Alexander's Great should have variegated leaves although it may not be apparent in immature leaves. It's early in the season and the leaves should show variegation by early summer. If not, please send a photo to service@dutchbulbs.com for assistance. Was this answer helpful to you
