Very pretty flowers!

Submitted 2 years ago

From Tulsa, Ok

Although the flowers these plants produced this year were not exactly like the picture, they're still very pretty. Mine didn't have any blue or deep purple markings, but they were a pretty lavender color. Last year I planted them too late to flower, but they all came up and were very green last year. I planted them in a shaded area that gets a little bit of morning sun. My pics are from this year and I've been enjoying them all spring!

I love Tradescantia. This one arrived healthy-looking and it is doing well. However the flowers are white, with a tiny hint of lavender, not nearly as dark as the photo shows. The buds are nice and purple. But the flowers are very pale, once they open. Maybe when it gets bigger and has more buds and flowers, it will have the more colorful effect I'd hoped for.

Q
Do the flowers turn out to be as blue as depicted in the photo? It's been over a year since that one review and I wonder. Maybe soil acidity plays a factor, as it does for hydrangea. Or maybe the photo is too blue and needs to be replaced.
Asked by Alana
Verified Reply - AngelaThis is an interesting question because Tradescantia plants can be sensitive to auto exhausts, sulfur dioxides and low levels of radiation. They are considered bioindicators. The color changes in this plant could possibly be related to the environmental conditions in which they are grown. Although, it's not likely due to the pH of the soil. I would expect there to be variations in the flower and stamen colors of this plant. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Is this considered to be invasive in rural communities?

Q
I live in a suburb of Seattle, WA, growing zone 8B. I planted my tradescantia merlot in pots when they arrived and kept them in a semi-heated greenhouse. It is now the second week of May and they have not begun to grow. I am a new gardener. So far, I have had great success with my spring-blooming plants, and have had nearly 100% success rate with 50-60 dahlias I have potted in the greenhouse and which are now between 6 and 12" high. However, my tradescantia have not even begun to grow. Is this normal, or have I done something wrong in planting them as I have?
Asked by Jan, a beginning gardener
Verified Reply - AngelaI think you should be seeing new top growth by this time. It's hard to say what may have gone wrong but we will reach out to you by email with a positive resolution. We're very sorry the plants have failed to grow for you.Was this answer helpful to you
