Christmas Fern

Provides shaded areas with rich green color at Christmas and throughout the winter months. Christmas Fern, also known as Polystichum acrostichoides, is a very hardy evergreen fern with lance-shaped leaflets in dense clusters. Native to the United States, this is an excellent perennial for woodland gardens, shade gardens and native plant areas. Tolerant of dryish and moist soils, the Christmas Fern can also be planted along shaded foundations or planted in large groups on slopes for erosion control. Deer tend to avoid this low-maintenance plant.

Some of the plants were a little dried out when I planted them, but they came back. All grew nicely, and added a lively touch to shady places.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

I ordered a bag of 5. I planted these right away, and waited a long time to see anything emerge. Ultimately, only four of them came up. The roots were very small, and the ones that came up each only produced a single, small frond. Certainly nothing like the catalog photo. I hope these will grow over time, but they were very small, and one never came up at all. Not a great purchase. Or even a good one. 🙁

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Q
I'm interested in planting some Christmas ferns as a border in substantial shade in Zone 5. I've read however that this species doesn't thrive In clayey soils though you don't seem to echo that in your description. What's the real story? Even if clay isn't a problem should it be amended for better results? Are there other evergreen ferns that might be a better choice? Thanks.
Asked by Harvey
Verified Reply - KimberlyWhile Christmas Fern can grow in other types of soils as well, the fern cannot tolerate clay and water-logged soils. Ferns do not do well in clay and water-logged soils. Was this answer helpful to you
