Royal Fern

Make a statement with this tall, handsome fern. Royal Fern (Osmunda regalis) features a deep, forest green color and long, smooth-edged leaves. Growing 5-7 ft. tall, the graceful fronds add color and texture to shaded borders, woodland gardens and native gardens. This native shade perennial grows well in wet areas along ponds, streams and water gardens. Its fronds often turn yellow to brown hues in the fall. Like other ferns, it's a low-maintenance, easy-to-grow perennial that's rarely bothered by insects or diseases. Deer tend to pass it by.

Surprised

From NJ

These royal ferns arrived in March and seemed totally dead. Dried out. Light as a feather. I contacted customer service and they promptly replied advising I plant them and wait a few weeks. I planted them in very wet heavy clay soil and forgot about them. Almost three months later in late June, three out of five popped up. I think the other two may have grown if I planted with more care. I trust this company more now and I will have patience and treat them with better care in future. Also I read they are slow to grow after winter.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

The order was in terrible shape

From Palo Alto, California

The ferns were broken in shipment - I reported it and the co. gave me $15 + plus change - no shipping credit. I planted the 2-1/2 plants and cared for them every day and now have 2 that are robust and 1 that still needs care. There was no discussion as to other solutions, it was a dry repetitive solution. My family has had excellent dealings with the Dutch from WWII until today. It was not the small amount of money it was the dictorial rude terms and at the end they said " anything else I can do for you?" Am sorry that the ferns and purchase was not satisfactory. I paid my gardener to prep holes in anticipation for planting. Am not sure if I'm going to order from K van Bourgondien again.

Q
This may be a dumb question, but do they spread/multiply How wide do the grow Are they bulbs or bare root
Asked by Judy
Product Owner - jdh38They are usually shipped bare root. They can multiply by spores on the underside of the fronds if the conditions are right. They like rich moist soil. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I am looking for plants for a shady hillside under evergreen trees mostly fur and pine. Native ferns have not grown there although they grow on a nearby hillside. Will this naturalize in the midst of those trees? Would it be a good background plant for Astilbe? Open to suggestions!
