Dwarf Reblooming Phlox Bambini® Desire

Dwarf Reblooming Phlox Bambini® Desire

This dwarf phlox is aptly named indeed. Desire is part of the reblooming Bambini® series. Compact plants grow to 10" tall and wide, and produce lush, colorful panicles of bright purple florets. An outstanding variety, it has a lovely fragrance that perfumes the entire area, both indoors and out. Desire is an easy-to-grow phlox that attracts butterflies and other pollinators with its brilliant hue, scintillating aroma and a flower form that makes accessing vital nectar a breeze. Makes an incredible display in front borders, mixed containers and cut-flower bouquets. Plus, these show-stopping blooms perennialize well, returning yearly with vigor.

None of these grew despite my best efforts. I was really looking forward to filling the vacant area next to my driveway with vibrant color.

Good Customer Service

Just wanted to send a Thank You to " Jessica" at Customer Service for responding promptly to my question about my recent purchase and unfortunately some bad luck with the bare root dwarf bambini phlox and offering a merchandise credit.. I was able to grow one of the bare roots, and hoping to have lovely purple flowers in this little gem soon. Unfortunately, I wasn't so lucky with the others. I will be ordering some more next season and hoping for better luck. (if anyone who has been successful in growing these has any suggestions, they would be welcome to me, and I am sure other customers! :) Again, Thanks!

Experienced Gardner, but a disappointed one

From DC Metro Area

I have a large garden with many healthy blooming perennials in the DC area. I purchased a bag of 5 bare roots last Fall. All looked great in temp pots, which I then moved to the garden with lots of mulch for winter. All died by the Spring / 2024. I purchased another bag this Spring - again all sprouted, but very soon died. I then purchased my third bag of bare root bambini bulbs. There were actually more than the 5 I thought I was purchasing, so was very excited about that - I planted them all in small pots, did not water much, as i learned from previous reviewers. Most sprouted, but soon died. One plant did well which I moved to the garden when the weather warmed up. It is doing well, and I am hoping it will bloom. I had 2 others plants still in small pots which I was hoping would do well. One just died, so I have one left. It is still alive, not growing very fast, but am hoping it will survive long enough to move outside. So, total experience is, 3 bags purchased, one plant still thriving in the garden, and one possibility in the house. I think this is a good company, but for some reason, this particular plant, (which i really love and had great hopes for), seems to be very difficult to grow.

Failure to grow

Submitted 2 years ago

By Flowerlady

From Friona, TX

I planted 5 dwarf phlox ( Desire, Candy Crush, and Primadona mix) Only 2 even put up a tiny green shoot and after a couple of weeks they turned brown and died. I planted them in pots in a heated greenhouse when they arrived, so they were not even out in the weather. I also planted border dwarf dahlias. Four of the 5 of these came up.

potted up next day in 50/50 sharp sand and potting soil.

Beautiful plants! potted up the day aftrr arrival in 50/50 sharp sand and Miracle-Gro potting soil. The Miracle-Gro seems to be mostly peat these days (not scientifically confirmed) and stays a lot wetter than previous years. (Again, not scientifically confirmed. Just an observation of a 30 year gardener. Anyway, love these plants! Healthy and doing great after 1 month individually in old 1 gallon pots. Looking forward to seeing the blooms! Hoping these are more purple than pink! If you like purply pink you have to search out "Cloudburst". Bought that last year. Lol, OMG, those plants are blooming machines! After early June in Norfolk, Virginia, Cloudburst was a nonstop bloomer! Almost like an annual! I am hoping Bambini Desire blooms as long and as well. The Bambini Desire plants look as nice, so fingers crossed.

👍 all sprouting!

By Planter

From Idaho

All mine are starting to sprout. I read that The key is not to over water or they will rot in the pot before sprouting. I planted them in temp. Pots. One in a milk jug so I could see roots. As long as I could see moisture inside, I did not water. The top looked dry. Then Wala they sprouted. It was very hard not to water when the tops looked dry but I resisted the temptation and it worked .

Q
will bareroot bambi phlox planted in Spring bloom first year Why so many comments about no growth
Asked by Jim
Verified Reply - AngelaBambini Phlox may or may not bloom the first year planted. Like all perennials they will spend the first year developing a healthy root system. The bareroots should be planted just below the soil level. Planting too deeply and over watering are common mistakes with these plants. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Hi. Bare roots for bambini arrived in great shape. You told one person they could be planted outdoors regardless of frost date. But, the ground is very soggy in Md right now, although it has been fairly warm here . Should I start them indoors so roots don't rot in too much water? Thanks
Asked by Carol
Verified Reply - AngelaUnfortunately soggy soil is not really workable. You can start your Bambini Phlox in pots but I would keep the pots in a cool garage or basement rather than indoors. When the soil is dried out a bit, you can stick them in the ground. If they break dormancy and begin to put up new top growth, you will want to wait until after the last frost date to put them in the garden. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Which way do you plant the route?
Asked by Brian
Verified Reply - AngelaPlant the bareroot horizontally no more than an inch below the soil level. The plant will find it's way!Was this answer helpful to you
