Astilbe Amethyst

Feathery flower spikes in a pretty lavender hue brighten summer shade gardens. Growing 24-36" tall, Astilbe Amethyst adds wonderful color, texture and movement to perennial borders, bed plantings and containers. Astilbe Amethyst blooms in early to midsummer, and its feathery plumes are showy in the garden and a vase. Lacy, deep green or bronze-green foliage adds texture to the garden throughout the season. It grows best when planted in rich, moist soil and in shade to partial shade. For maximum impact, plant in groups of 5 or more. Deer tend to avoid astilbe plants.

As an owner of a retail nursery here in Oregon, I would definitely recommend K.Van. K.Van is my "go-to" supplier for viable and healthy plants with a high rate of germination and yield rate. I've ordered from them for the past 5 years and will continue to do so.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Submitted 3 years ago

By Ken

I bought 40 bare root plants. They have been in the ground for 8 weeks and I have under 50% emergence, all planted in same area, same depth, same water, same everything. (NOTE: these need more than usual watering.)

By Squirrels are judging you

From n. of chicago

I have no experience with growing anything from roots but these were so pretty! they just come in a big clump, in a plastic baggie. I had ordered ferns this way and was a bit upset because they were clumps in a baggie in a plastic bag and arrived so broken and stomped they weren't at all viable. (why ship this way?) These were in a box ( would pay Xtra to have individual plants in own bag). I took a giant bowl and carefully put what seemed to be "a" root, standing them up (you cant tell which is up,like this). I sprayed until all was soaked then covered with Saran. it took a week but sprouts came up allowing me to turn some plants "up" better. Its been too cold to plant yet but these are all coming up and good to go next week. wish packing was a bit more careful...the ferns bought earlier were destroyed but these I hope will be happy outside.

I hesitated to buy barefoot. But this color is rare in my area, and the price meant I really only needed to succeed with a couple to be satisfied. To my surprise, all 10 are doing great!

9 out of 10 came up!

Submitted 4 years ago

By CSree

From White Plains, NY

I planted them in nov 2020, 9 out of them came up by apr 20, 2021. They sprouted a bit erratically. I assumed it was going to be just 4, but then 2 weeks later, the others came up. Eager to see the blooms, such a rare color!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Will this bloom in the first year?
Asked by none
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Astilbe Amethyst may or may not bloom the first year planted. A significant amount of energy is used for root development the first year. You should definitely see blooms by the second or third year after planting. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
Hi I have lots of squirrel & rabbits that dig up, eat my bulbs. Will these hold up against that? Thanks!
Asked by Jess
Verified Reply - AngelaAstilbe isn't a bulb and won't be as attractive to the squirrels. Rabbits may snack on the tender new growth but usually won't bother once the plant has established. You can use a cage or cloche to protect the plant until it gets established. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Will this Astilbe grow well in Colorado (5a) at 7000' elevation?
Asked by Kim

Q
Best time to plant in one gal pots
Asked by Pat
Verified Reply - AngelaYou can plant Astilbe Amethyst in pots in the spring or fall. Either way, we suggest moving the pots to an unheated garage or basement for winter protection in colder regions. We are currently accepting orders for fall shipping. You will want to pot them up when they arrive and keep them outside until winter. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
Will these grow in SW Florida? How long do they hold their bloom?
Asked by N/A
Verified Reply - AngelaAstilbe Amethyst is suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 4-8. It appears you are gardening in zone 10. I'm afraid these plants won't be successful due to the heat in your area. These flowers usually last 2-3 weeks. Was this answer helpful to you
