The bloom may not be "exactly" as the catalog photo, but it's still a nice addition to my bed. It pleasantly surprised me by blooming in its first season. I am hoping that next year, once it has gotten truly acclimated to this area, possibly the red will be more vibrant. My only disappointment, if I must have a complaint, is that the bloom lasts only a day or two - so enjoy quickly! Some things we simply don't have any control over.

Took 5 years, but finally a spectacular display

I planted 5 bulbs as instructed, but got no blooms for the first 2 years. Year 3, I moved them in the fall and in June I got two flower stalks which the snails chewed up just before they opened. 4th year got 3 flower stalks which were nice but underwhelming for the garden space the 5 clumps were taking. The 5th year, I had decided to pull them, after they bloomed, and plant something more productive. They must have been worried, because they were spectacular. I got many oohs and aahs from passerby's, so much so that now I'm keeping them. Word of caution, the blooms don't last long, and you may need to keep the snails away.

Q
I just planted them. Hopefully I get some growth before it freezes. Do you see the predicament I'm in? The growing season here in Montana is 87 days on average, with maybe 60-70 days left. I hope these are fast growers, because I will have to dig them up in a few months no matter what. What do you think? Will they grow fast enough? What should I do?
Asked by David A.
Verified Reply - KimberlyDon't expect any flowers the first summer after planting. It will take at least one full growing season for the new bulbs to establish roots and form buds for the second year. Was this answer helpful to you
