Cactus Dahlia Black Narcissus

Cactus Dahlia Black Narcissus

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
With the exotic look of a rare desert flower, this semi-cactus type dahlia makes quite a scene in the garden or in a vase. The deep red, spiky petals of the 6" wide blooms are sure to turn heads, especially when the plants are grouped together—either as a single-variety display or when combined with light or white blooms. Black Narcissus gives such a punch of unique color and unusual style to midsummer properties, your customers will be begging for more each growing season. We suggest planting Black Narcissus in borders, cutting gardens or landscape beds that get full sun and are well drained. Flowers keep coming until the first frost, so there are plenty to enjoy indoors, too. Lift in fall in zones 3-8.

Beautiful early blooms

Submitted 10 months ago

By Scott

From San Jose, CA

Zone 8, received the tubers early at beginning of March. Started the plant indoors and moved outside at about 6 inches tall. Grew really fast, it's end of May now and I've had blooms for almost a month now. Very pretty, unique bloom.

These didn't come up out of the ground. I don't know what happened. I planted them in cages, and took care, but they didn't produce.

Nice color, not a robust plant.

From Madison, WI

I planted five of these last year. The blooms are a very dark crimson red, not truly black (I don't think it is biologically possible to actually get a "black" pigment from a dahlia!), and look stunning as small, darker contrasts with other dahlias in an arrangement. They are small blooms, admittedly smaller than what I was expecting, at approximately 3" in diameter. This can actually be a good thing when put into an arrangement with larger flowers as a punctuating, yet necessarily more diminutive offset; they are not striking or particularly notable as a stand alone bloom, however. My major issue was that the plant itself is simply not robust, growing much slower with more fragile stems and fewer blooms than the majority of the other, approximately 15 varieties I was growing. When it came time to select the best and most striking plants to overwinter, this was not one of them and I didn't feel too bad about simply discarding the tubers. I would like to find a more robust, hardier plant with more reliable blooms in the future with this same, really nice color motif.

The bareroots were delivered during the bad shipping/ Covid delays and they had been overheated and dried out because of it. I didn't expect any of them to come up but they all did! They grew to chest high and had prolific blooms. They are still blooming. Neighbors all wanted to know what they were.

Q
What does lift in fall mean
Asked by RONNIE
Verified Reply - AngelaThe term lifting means to dig up a bulb or tuber. This is usually done in order to store them in a frost free location for winter. They can be planted again the following spring. It looks like you are gardening in USDA Hardiness Zone 7 and will need to lift Dahlia tubers in the fall. Was this answer helpful to you
