I grow all of my dahlias in containers. This keeps subterranean pests such as gophers and moles away from tubers. Also, native soil in my area of Northern California is heavy red clay which is not optimal for tubers. Dahlias seem to thrive in the commercial potting soil that I use. This year, the dahlia growing season was very challenging. Late rains and a much colder Spring caused the first green shoots from my older established dahlias to die back. Then, a much hotter than expected Summer delayed the blooming of many of my plants. This is my first year with "Tommy", aka Thomas Edison, the tubers that I purchased were in very good shape when I received them from the grower. The plant was healthy and grew to be about 4 feet tall. I don't disbud my dahlias so the flowers tend to be smaller. Tommy's blooms were lovely this year and I certainly hope to have many more years of this beauty bloom'in in my garden.

A beautiful purple dahlia that began blooming in August. I'm in zone 9. Morning sun and a little afternoon sun. This guy loved the extreme heat of early September we had this year and just exploded with buds. One day it was 112 F. October has been very flowery. He's a great cut flower in a wide enough vase. Very striking!

From Elwood N.J.

This is my all time favorite dahlia and never disappoints, If you don't stake or cage, this dahlia will ramble 12 feet easy. In any case these flowers are breathtaking and too numerous to count with buds growing everywhere. A MUST FOR EVERYONE'S GARDEN.
