Saffron crocus is a fall-blooming crocus that features lilac flowers with orange stamens. The stamens may be removed and dried for use as saffron, a prized seasoning. Growing 4-6" tall, Crocus Sativus add charm to perennial beds and rock gardens when they bloom in early to mid fall. They grow best in full sun and naturalize well. The leaves turn a pretty, golden yellow color in fall. Like other crocus bulbs, they look best when planted in groups of at least 10 or more. Plant Crocus Sativus bulbs in late summer to early fall.

Very late fall blooms!

Submitted 5 months ago

By Grandma Rose

From Valley City, Ohio 44280

I planted these last year. I had blooms in December the first year. They came up this October. Should be blooming end of November into December here in Northeast Ohio. I am surprised they bloom so late.

Soil Matters

I planted Crocus sativus in 2 areas last year. It looked so great that I planted more this year ... it bloomed the first year in the lighter loam soil. (We had saffron rice at dinner one night, and kitchari another night.) In the heavy clay soil, it bloomed the 2nd yr. (This time I made paella.) What a sweet, heavenly scent!

first but humble

I was delighted to see this delicate and early flower to emergy out of the mulch and enchant me every day. I saved all the threads and used them for cooking. I bothered all my neighbors about the news, but they tolerated me with a benign smile. And here I thought I was educating them and they actually wanted to be educated. But who worries about delicate plants these days? Unless the blooms are bright red and as big as a dinner plate, who cares. And there were more blooms than I thought I had planted bulbs. We shall see this coming winter/spring.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Planted last fall - first harvest this year. Had them in a rolling planter that we put under and overhang to stay dry during the summer - rolled back out into the sun a month ago and they're doing great.
