Announcing the first Darwin Hybrid tulip to emerge white, open white, and stay white... all throughout the growing season. White Clouds is the breakthrough in coloration that gardeners and landscapers have been waiting for--long-lasting elegance, grace and shimmering white flowers in one variety. White Clouds is a dependable bloomer with exceptional tolerance to heat, making it an ideal choice for Southern climates. Among the best tulips for perennializing, it has proven to bloom year after year in the garden. As with all most Darwin Hybrids, it produces substantial tulips on strong, straight stems—great for cut-flower applications.

Beautiful, strong flowers, but not very perennial

Submitted 11 months ago

I loved these tulips so much last spring that I planted additional clusters of them last fall. The newly planted White Clouds (paired with Apeldoorn) all bloomed beautifully with long-lasting flowers; however, the bulbs from the previous year produced only scraggly foliage with no flowers. These are lovely tulips, but sadly I have not found them to be reliably perennial despite being Darwins.

March Blooming in Central Alabama, fyi

Submitted 1 year ago

By Ken

From Birmingham, Alabama / Alabaster, Alabama

I containerized 25 of these White Cloud bulbs, 13 in one clay 18" pot, 12 in another. These are the standard "squat" style terra cotta clay pots available at some big box stores. Potted them on November 1, 2023. They were planted with 2 inches of medium-sized river pebbles in the bottoms of the pots for drainage, and I used 100% MiracleGro CITRUS MIX, to ensure the bulbs would have excellent drainage. That seemed to work well. Their bloom time was peak bloom in mid-March, in Shelby County, Alabama. This is Zone 8A. They were in mostly full sun, with some morning shade. All bloomed, although petals would begin to drop after about 4-5 days from flower opening. My next test will be to see if they return next spring. I tentatively plan to leave them in the clay pots throughout summer, and stop watering as soon as all the foliage browns. I am still considering removing half or all of the bulbs and storing for the summer. Will report back if this website permits supplemental reviews. Other notes: bloom size was large, entire white inside and out, only 2 or 3 needed dead-heading when they appeared to be fertilized, but all flower stems were trimmed after blooming. No supplemental feeding was given during this first season, given that the growing medium was fresh. I anticipate feeding them for the next growing season, however. The clay pots allowed nice drying times during cold, rainy weather. I placed a layer of medium-sized river pebbles on top of each pot until first signs of growth begin to appear, in order to discourage squirrels and birds from digging in the containers. The bulbs had approximately 2 inches distance between one another, and perhaps 2-3 inches of growing medium beneath the base of the bulbs and 4-6 inches of citrus mix over the tops of the bulbs. The flower stems seemed sturdy and dis not flop over.

Big, beautiful, long-lasting white blossoms!

Submitted 2 years ago

By Lynne loves flowers!

From Hamilton, OH

Beautiful tulips that bloomed with large white blooms that lasted a long time. We were having a dry spell so I watered them and the blossoms seemed to get even bigger. I'm already looking forward to next spring hoping they will return just as big as this year.

Beautiful, large, crisp white flowers on tall, sturdy stems. They've been blooming for over 3 weeks now and survived a heavy rain storm quite well. I hope they come back next year!
