Colocasia gigantea 'Thailand Giant'

Colocasia gigantea 'Thailand Giant'

Primarily grown for its foliage, Thailand Giant can be grown as a tall screen or corner planting. It can also be grown in a patio container. Elephant ears grow best when planted in partially shaded moist areas. Amazing Plant!

Submitted 1 year ago

By Andrea the plantaphile

From Somerset Kentucky, USA

Put this in the ground in shade in RICH RICH RICH soil... and be AMAZED at it's beauty. Dig in fall BEFORE the freeze... I have grown the same bulbs/tubers every year for three years. Last year I left it until the first hard frost. I dug it up and discovered the tuber had damage. I overwintered it, and am growing it again.... same tuber. BUT if you dig BEFORE the first freeze, you'll have more plants each year as the tuber puts off multiple baby shoot tubers that you can cut off and grow separately. Follow their directions, can't go wrong.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Ordered twelve of these Thai Giants. Bulbs received were tiny golf ball sized just like other purchasers stated, not 7" to 9" as described by the company. Of the 12, all but a couple were moldy, rotten and dead. Have not seen any signs of life from the couple I planted, assuming a total loss. Contacted K.van B., they provided a credit for future purchase for these and the dead canna bulbs and fern roots that were sent. I've ordered hundreds of tulips and daffodils from this company with great success, probably a good idea to stick to spring bulbs from this company in the future.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

One of the three bulbs came up and unfortunately it was not a Thai Giant, it wasn't even a large elephant ear.

Buyers beware: Disappointingly small bulbs

Submitted 4 years ago

By Andy

From Memphis, TN

The bulbs I received were 2.5 to 3 " tall & approx. 2" in diameter ...vs. 7 - 9 " advertised. They were healthy looking, but much much much smaller than the anticipated grapefruit-sized bulbs. They were half the size the new bulbs formed from last year's elephant ears purchased from a hardware store! Will not make future purchases form Dutch Bulbs

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Absolutely stunning. Even in the shorter growing period in the Dakotas, they grew over 4' tall with gorgeous leaves. Sharon

Q
When you say,"they should be lifted in the fall in zones 3-8, and stored in a cool, dry, frost-free location." What exactly should I do? Dig them up and put them in pots and bring them inside?
Asked by aaron
Verified Reply - AngelaYou can dig up your Colocasia tubers right up until the first frost when the leaves are brown. Gently shake off soil. Carefully cut off any foliage and set them in a warm dark spot with good air circulation for about a week to dry. You can then wrap them in paper and put them in cardboard boxes. Store the box in a location with temperatures about 55 F.Was this answer helpful to you
Q
If I were planting this "in" a pond... What is the best way to do this. When I say "in", I mean in the water. (Basket with pea gravel? Or some other way)
Asked by Donovan
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Colocasia gigantea 'Thailand Giant' can be grown on the margins of a pond. We don't suggest planting it "in" the pond. This variety of Colocasia doesn't grow well submerged. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
What's it mean to lift for zone 6 where and how do you store bulbs?
Asked by Kim
Verified Reply - AngelaLifting means to dig the bulbs up from the ground. Before the first frost cut the stems back to about 6 inches. Carefully dig up the tubers and brush off any soil. Store them in dry sawdust or peat moss in a bucket or tub at about 50 degrees. You can replant them in the spring. Was this answer helpful to you
