Alocasia plumbea Nigra

Alocasia plumbea Nigra

The stunning, 12-24" leaves have a metallic look and are so dark green that they appear black. Alocasia plumbea Nigra's leaves are held on strong, purple stems, creating a bold, dramatic and tropical look. Growing 3-5 ft. tall, this Elephant Ear provides a bold accent in the garden—or plant in a patio container. It grows best in partial to full shade. Because Elephant Ears are tender plants sensitive to the cold, they should be lifted in the fall in zones 3-8, and stored in a cool, dry, frost-free location. Deer tend to avoid.

Teeny tiny bulb, not as described on the website

Submitted 3 years ago

By Upstate NY Gardener

From Finger Lakes region, NY State

The website notes that the bulb size is 9-11" (in circumference, meaning 2.5 - 3.5" in diameter). But the bulb (actually a corm) received was the size of a small daffodil bulb or large Muscari bulb, 9-11 cm in circumference. Very different from the Colocasia esculenta corms I've bought from local garden centers, which are 35-45 cm in diameter and weigh over a pound. I can't imagine this tiny thing growing large enough in only one season to match the picture. On the plus side the bulb was heavy, firm, and was beginning to sprout - clearly alive and well. I've planted it in an 8" pot and will transplant it later if it grows well. Can't say yet if I would recommend it to a friend.

Undersized tubers.

Submitted 4 years ago

By Patti

From Connecticut

I am happy that you sell tubers and not tissue culture plants-however, I was not expecting a tuber the size of a daffodil bulb. I will plant and hope they grow large enough to make a respectable showing in a 16-18" diameter pot before our first frost.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

Q
Do these spread like a regular Elephant Ear? Here in Northwest Florida they grow wild and they will spread even under a concrete walkway.
Asked by Mary Ann
Verified Reply - AngelaAlocasia will spread but not aggressively and shouldn't get out of hand. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
For cold weather storage, is it OK to cut the stems at ground level, or does it have to be kept with stems and leaves?
Asked by David
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Alocasia plumbea Nigra can be cut back in the fall. You will want to dig up the bulb and store it in a cool (not freezing) and dry location. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
How big will they get the first year?
Asked by Steve
Verified Reply - ViciI see by your zip code you are in zone 9b/10. The growth of this plant will vary depending on growing conditions. You should plant it 2 - 4" below soil level. Keep well watered. It is best to mulch if not grown in standing water. It should be at full maturity in about 3 years. Was this answer helpful to you
