Beyond my expectations

Submitted 7 months ago

By Bert

From Haughton, LA

Purchased 3 of these plants, with the thought that I'd be waiting for at least a year, before I'd have to worry about permanent locations. Every one of the plants not only have grown to almost 4 feet, but are around 2-3 feet wide. The blooms are magnificent and certainly an attention grabber. Mind blown!!

Easy to grow in a planter

Submitted 11 months ago

By Former BlackThumb

From Frederick, Maryland

I bought two Midnight Marvels a couple years ago, planted them in planters outside and they took almost 2 months to show signs of growth. They don't come up at exactly the same time either. One waited a week after the other. And now they have survived 2 Maryland winters and grow back thicker each spring. The thing to be careful of is they dry out quickly in planters.

Two of the roots have been eaten by groups sadly. But the one that survived looks sturdy and beautiful.

Zero for Six

By Old Steve

I purchased six of these in mid-April and planted as instructed in a sunny section of my garden. It rained most of the spring so they were well watered. It's been over a month and so far no growth has appeared.

Disappointed

Submitted 2 years ago

By Tique

From Tucson

On March 16, 2023, I placed an order for a few of my favorite plants which arrived on time and anxiously planted them early next morning and could hardly wait for any sign of growth. Well here it is the middle of May & I am still waiting for any sign of growth of half of them - very disappointed!!! Double Apricot Begonia, only 2 of the 4 bulbs has started to sprout, Amaryllis Alaska, only 1 of 3 bulbs developed, Hibiscus Midnight Marvel PP24079, of the three roots, none of the three is showing any sign of growth, and my pride & joy, of the 3 roots Hibiscus Berry Awesome, all three are about 2 feet tall and looking and doing fantastic. I am especially bummed out over the Midnight Marvel Hibiscus and very disappointed in this company as I know they have always had an outstanding reputation. Will see if I can find the Midnight Marvel Hibiscus somewhere else and move on. Thanks for letting me vent!!!

Q
I am in Zone 5A . What ground temps can these bare roots tolerate if they're planted as soon as they arrive and we're still threatened with frost and even snow going into May ?
Asked by LV
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Midnight Marvel plant will be dormant and can be planted as long as the ground is not frozen solid. They will wake up as the soil temperatures warm. You can expect to see new growth around late May.Was this answer helpful to you
Q
When do you plant these hibiscus bulbs? I see the bloom July-August
Asked by Cindy
Verified Reply - AngelaWe will ship the Hibiscus Midnight Marvel this spring and you will want to plant them when they arrive. They take a while to emerge from the ground, so mark where they are planted. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
Can I make tea from the flower petals or leaves? Anyone know if this variety is edible?
Asked by Tonya
Verified Reply - AngelaThis Hardy Hibiscus is not the variety typically used for teas. You might be looking for Hibiscus Sabdariffa. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Is this hibiscus plant considered a perennial? Several reviews suggest that they do indeed come up with very year and their mature size would also lead one o believe that they're perennials, but I want to be sure before purchasing. Zone 5B
Asked by Debra
Verified Reply - AngelaThe HIbiscus Midnight Marvel is a perennial in USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 9. It will die back to the ground and emerge again in the very late spring in your zone. Was this answer helpful to you

Q
Why would I need three roots whenI only have room for one plant?
Asked by Galen
Verified Reply - AngelaWe are a wholesale supplier and offers are generally in multiples at wholesale prices. If you can't find room for the other roots, you could share them with family or friends. Otherwise, here is a source to purchase one plant. https://www.springhillnursery.com/product/hibiscus-midnight-marvel-hardyyWas this answer helpful to you
Q
Is it strong with ground cover plants and how tall does it get. Is this a rose of Sharon verity
Asked by Jeremy
Verified Reply - AngelaThe HIbiscus Midnight Marvel is not a 'Rose of Sharon' variety. The plant is strong but ground cover should be pushed or trimmed back to allow the plant to easily emerge in the late spring. Midnight Marvel will reach a mature height of approximately 4 feet with a similar spread. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
What winter prep/care do they need? Should I trim down a lot after a freeze?
Asked by LL
Verified Reply - AngelaIt's important to mulch over the planting the first winter. After the Midnight Marvel Hardy Hibiscus has browned from frost, cut back to about 12 inches above the ground. Wait until the soil approaches freezing to apply about 6 inches of mulch. Remember to pull the mulch back in the spring. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I planted 3 midnight marvel hibiscus last year and they were beautiful. This year not one is growing. Nothing. Location of plants are good. What happened..?
Asked by pinkpine
Verified Reply - AngelaYou need to have a little patience with these plants. They are one of the very last plants to emerge. Also, our spring soil temperatures have been cooler than average. I suspect now that warmer temperatures are arriving, you will see them pop up very soon. It can sometimes be June before they show up. Please let us know if they do not appear.
