Hosta Bressingham Blue

Hosta Bressingham Blue

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Puckered, deeply ridged, blue-green leaves give shade gardens and mixed container plantings a unique look. Pale purple flowers open above the foliage in midsummer. Growing 30" tall, Bressingham Blue Hosta is an easy-care shade perennial. Hosta lilies, sometimes called "Plantain" or "Heart Lilies," are some of the finest foundation or specimen plants you can find for shady areas. They're unequaled for their broad, ribbed, wavy foliage and fragrant, bell-shaped flowers. Hostas take about one year to establish themselves, but do not have to be dug or divided.

Good Understory Plants

I used these plants to fill in a bare spot under a redbud tree knowing they would be rather large and take up space. I mixed them with ferns to vary leaf shape and color. All of them grew but have not yet reached their full potential.

They arrived in great shape and I planted them according to directions and they are doing really well. Not as "blue" as I thought they ought to be but maybe that will come in time.

Beautiful and Dark

Submitted 6 years ago

From Long Island, NY

I am not a fan of Hostas. I think they are over-used and look cruddy after the flowers fade. However when I saw the picture of these Bressingham Hostas I thought they looked dark, robust and would add a lovely backdrop to my smaller shade plants. I recieved three roots last fall and planted them. I was convinced they were dead, rotten and were a waste of money--I was wrong! These three popped up overnight, and grew to a reasonably large size for a year-one plant. The color does not disappoint. They are beautiful. I've decided to trim off the flowers to avoid the look I dislike, and instead leave them as foliage only. I highly recommend these Hostas for anyone, but especially someone who likes a little change from the more common shade garden defaults.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Q
I have two supposedly Blue Hostas on the north side against the house. The house has a 2' overhange. I also have several trees, just not against the house. These are in direct sun from 8:00 until 10:00 in June and part July. Is that why they are green?
Asked by L John
Verified Reply - AngelaBlue Hostas usually emerge blue. They turn green when the temperatures become hot because the wax coating eventually breaks down. Planting blue Hostas in full shade will help them retain their blue color longer. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I m seeking shade loving plants for pollenators/ hummingbirds/ renovating old garden. Im retired/ limited income.. like fragrant flowering plants zone 7 Cape Cod
Asked by Pomologistpete
Verified Reply - AngelaI would suggest Astilbe, Begonias and Bleeding Hearts for your shade garden. You might also consider Lily of the Valley if you have enough space to allow it to spread. Otherwise plant it in a container of some type to control the spread. It is wonderfully fragrant, grows well in shade and attracts pollinators. It's a great plant but it is toxic if ingestedWas this answer helpful to you
Q
Will this grow under a pine tree
Asked by Sandy
Verified Reply - AngelaHosta Bressingham Blue prefers moist soil. A pine tree is typically a water hog. If you can keep the soil moist, the hosta should grow well. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
How long do the leaves remain blue?
Asked by Ed
Verified Reply - AngelaHosta Bressingham Blue will have blue green foliage through summer if growing in shade, cool temperatures and moderate rainfall. Full shade will produce the best blue color. Sun exposure and heat will produce more green shades as it literally melts the blue off the leaves over time. Was this answer helpful to you
