Almost Black

Submitted 2 years ago

By Ali

From Milwaukee, WI

We planted these October of 2022 and had our first bloom June 1, 2023, with several more blooms coming in between two plants. It is beautiful (our whole neighborhood is full of the typical lighter purple and yellow irises and we wanted something different), but it is not exactly what I would call "black is black;" it's a very dark purple. Still very lovely and I'm pleased that they are blooming; this was our first purchase for plants online anywhere.

She was worth the money to get the color I wanted. Only one has opened so far but I'm just thrilled she's healthy and the color I purchased.

Q
My black irises didn't flower this year. Any suggestions on why they wouldn't have?
Asked by Shan
Verified Reply - AngelaI wasn't able to locate an order for you with the email provided. If the rhizomes were planted this spring or last fall, the plants should flower next spring. Irises sometimes take a year to get established before flowering. If your irises have been planted for 3 to 5 years and multiplied, they could be over crowded. It's time to divide them. Otherwise, look for signs of iris borers. Was this answer helpful to you
