Darwin Hybrid Tulip Apeldoorn

Darwin Hybrid Tulip Apeldoorn

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Beloved classic offers brilliant red color, large flowers and sturdy stems—all on reliably perennial plants! Darwin Hybrid Tulip Apeldoorn was developed as a result of crossing the Single Late (Darwin and Cottage) Tulips with the Early Fosteriana Tulips. Truly exceptional, they are among the most weather resistant of all garden tulips with large, 5" flowerheads on strong, 22-24" stems. These statuesque beauties have exceptional perennial qualities and will produce many lovely giant flowers year after year with proper care. We recommend fertilization twice a year with our 100% Natural Bulb Food to improve their perennial nature.

Stunning, but not reliably perennial

Submitted 11 months ago

By Flower maximalist

From Zone 6b

I loved these tulips so much last spring that I planted additional clusters of them last fall. The newly planted Apeldoorns (paired with White Cloud) all bloomed beautifully with long-lasting flowers; however, the bulbs from the previous year produced only scraggly foliage with no flowers. These are lovely tulips, but sadly I have not found them to be reliably perennial despite being Darwins.

Gorgeous, brilliant red blooms on strong stems. The bulbs looked large and healthy and all 25 bloomed, though didn't last quite as long as the White Clouds I co-planted them with.

The red Apeldoorn variety comes back reliably for me each spring (Golden Apeldoorn did not). Blooms simultaneously with Quail daffodils. 5 years ago & still blooming strong! 👏

Q
In central Alabama, which RED tulip likely blooms simultaneously with Ice Follies daffodils?
Asked by Linda
Verified Reply - AngelaIce Follies typically bloom early in the spring. Fosteriana Tulip Red Emperor is the earliest red Tulip we offer. Blooming times can vary widely based on your conditions in your specific area. You might check with a local garden club for local expertise. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
1. Do any of the tulip bulbs you sell come pre-chilled? I've successfully grown Darwin hybrids here in Southern California by chilling in fridge until December. But I could get them in the ground sooner if they come pre-chilled. 2. These are listed as going only up to Zone 8, so will there be a problem with you sending them to me in Zone 10A? I know they need special care to grow here.
Asked by Nancy S
Verified Reply - AngelaWe don't offer pre-chilled bulbs. It's great that you are having success and we will absolutely ship you the bulbs. I am not sure you want to get the tulip bulbs in the ground sooner as your soil temperatures may be too warm before December. That could negate all of your chilling efforts. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
In the description of the Apeldoorn Darwin Hybrid Tulips, it is recommended to fertilize them twice a year. Please tell me when the proper time to fertilize them should be. Thank you.
Asked by Caz
Verified Reply - ViciTo produce the maximum number of top-quality spring flowers, tulips and daffodils require care first in fall, at planting time, and then again in spring. At both of these times, gardeners can enrich the soil by adding a couple of inches of organic compost as well as fertilizer. Apply to the soil in the fall and In spring, when new green shoots appear. Gardeners should also remember to let leaves and stems remain attached to bulbs this spring until they have lost their green color. Was this answer helpful to you
