These multiply year after year.

Submitted 3 years ago

By Grammy 66

From San Andreas, CA

These have a sweet smell and multiply year after year. I have to add mulch or bark to cover over the bulbs as they get more and many push up . They are great. Let the leaves stay on the plant and they also become mulch.

Winter bloom

Submitted 3 years ago

By Chris

From Uncasville, Ct.06382

I am quite disappointed as I ordered three bags and took great care in planting these in pretty pots with beautiful wrapping for Christmas gifts to friends and family. Not one has bloomed leading me to wonder if these were spent bulbs. I plant Amaryllis' for gifts every year. This was my first time with this particular one.

Merchant Response

Thank you for sharing your experience with the Amaryllis Belladonna. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment. The Amaryllis Belladonna is not advertised as an indoor-forcing bulb for Winter blooms. The bloom time for this item is Late Summer to Early Fall. However, we do have a satisfaction guarantee, so a Customer Care Agent will be reaching out to you with a positive resolution.

I received 5 large healthy looking bulbs and although I didn't expect blooms this year, one of them did bloom with a very large clump of at least 10 blossoms.

Can't speak to blooms, but the bulbs arrived packaged very well and they are HUGE. So, I am expecting profuse blooming. I hope I get that.

Sprouting Well, But Too Soon

Submitted 6 years ago

By Lscot

From Mill Valley, CA

I only planted these recently. They have put out very robust very healthy leaves about 9" now; but otherwise it is really too soon for a review since they won't bloom until August and it is only Decembet now. I have great expectations, though, as they look very healthy. All bulbs arrive in good health and very large, and the current, limited growth as of now foretells a good result later. In Northern California they are commonly planted along roadsides or around the entrance to longer driveway. But I have planted them within a garden, and they have grown well there, as well.

Q
Just received 11/5 in Oklahoma when is best time to plant outside?
Asked by Kate
Verified Reply - AngelaPlease go right ahead and plant your Amaryllis Belladonna bulbs now. You should see new foliage growth in the spring. The foliage then goes dormant and flower stems pop up in late summer or early fall. They may or may not bloom the first summer but definitely should bloom by the second year. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I purchased and fall planted 10 Amaryllis Bella Donna bulbs 2 years ago. The foliage has come up both years, grown nicely and died back in early August. I have not gotten any blossoms though. Why are the bulbs producing flowers?
Asked by Al
Verified Reply - AngelaAmaryllis belladonna is slow to bloom after being moved. If they are growing foliage, the bulbs are healthy. Be certain the plants are receiving at least 6 hours of sun a day. I would provide a slow release fertilizer in the very early spring. We suggest Van Bourgondien 100% Natural Bulb Food. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/product/Van-Bourgondien-100-Natural-Bulb-FoodWas this answer helpful to you
Q
What time of the year do you plant these bulbs?
Asked by Maura
Verified Reply - AngelaYou will plant Amaryllis belladonna bulbs in the fall when they arrive. They will push up foliage in the spring that will die back to the ground by early summer. The flower stalk appears in late summer. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I live in zone 5-5B and have had these beautiful flowers coming up for over 15 years (they were already planted when I moved in) and I have never lifted them for winter storage. I'd love to get more, but everywhere I look it says zone 7-10. Is there a variety that I'm just not finding, or CAN these bulbs take the cold winters of southeast Wisconsin?
Asked by Julie
Verified Reply - ViciI suggest that you look at item # 70962. It does look similar to the Amaryllis Belladonna but it is recommended for zones 5-10. It is Lycoris Squamigera (Amaryllis Hallii) .Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I live in Montana .. hardiness zone 4 .. can I leave naked lady bulbs in ground over winter… will they survive ???
Asked by Cora
Verified Reply - AngelaAmaryllis belladonna is winter hardy in zones 7 to 9. You will need to lift these bulbs and store them in a frost free location for winter in zone 4.Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I planted 25 bulbs last Fall, (amaryllis belladonna) purchased from you, and followed planting instructions precisely. It was a mild winter, so green leaves appeared in late February, followed by a very cold snap in March. Now I have all green and drooping leaves, but no sign of flowers appearing. Please advise.
Asked by Kathy
Verified Reply - ViciThis is a flower that grows its foliage in the spring. This foliage will die back and you will see the flower stalks grow without foliage in August/September. You can cut the leaves back once they die completely to tidy up your garden. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
ARe these the same as surprise lilies?(lose leaves then later stem and flower appear)?
Asked by Dxc
Verified Reply - AngelaAmaryllis belladonna is often referred to as Surprise Lily. There is also another 'Surprise Lily' flower with similar growth habits called Lycoris squamigera (Amaryllis Hallii). Both have foliage that appears in the early spring and then fades before the flower stem pops up and blooms in summer. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/product/lycoris-squamigera-Was this answer helpful to you
Q
can I plant the bulbs in Sacramemto Ca now?
Asked by Lady Di
Verified Reply - ViciYes. You can plant them as soon as you receive them. You plant these bulb so that the top of the bulb is just below the soil surface. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Is this the same bulb as ltcoris?
Asked by Buddie
Verified Reply - AngelaAmaryllis belladonna is a different plant than Lycoris squamigera, although they have similar growth behaviors. They both send up early spring foliage that dies back in the summer before the flower stems shoot up. The flowers are a similar color but different in many ways. I grow both and think you should as well. ( :Was this answer helpful to you
