Truly beautiful — ages to true blue

From Uxbridge, MA

So I ordered these as a blue flower lover, but honestly expecting them to be more purple than blue, as so many "blue" flowers are. When they opened, I saw what I expected — purple eyes — BUT! — a few days later, they eyes aged to gorgeous true blue. These are diminutive flowers, but worth it. Deer didn't touch them, but I was pretty aggressive with hot pepper and mint spray and a fishing line edge. I've only had them for one spring, so I don't know how well they'll return yet, but fingers crossed. These started opening around mid April here in zone 6a their first spring. They were not the first of my species tulips to bloom, but they were definitely in the earlier half of the 8+ varieties I grew this year. The blooms lasted well over a week, opening in the sun and closing in the shade.

Assorted spring bulbs — the white is tulipa humilis 'Alba Coreulea Oculata,' and I believe the other tulips are 'Persian Pearl.' There are a couple of tiny anemones too, and of course some hyacinths. #hyacinths #tulips #anemones #spring #springflowers #bulbs #springbulbs #flowers #flowersofinstagram #speciestulips

I have been eagerly awaiting these. Supposedly deer don't like species tulips, but I was still worried I'd never see these bloom because the deer have been rather indiscriminate in the past. Tulipa humilis 'Alba Coreulea Oculata' did not disappoint! #tulips #speciestulips #bulbs #spring #springbulbs #flowers #flowersofinstagram #whiteflowers #tulipahumilis

When they first open, the eyes are purple — but wait!

Small and more purple than blue but they are really pretty. I've gotten lots of complements on these. Not something you see in everyone's yard so you can really stand out.

Q
Hi. I believe I live in Zone 9, but I was wondering if it's possible that these flowers will work in my garden. Is there anything I could do to encourage their success or should I not bother? (My garden has areas both in shade and sun so I have a few options. Also, could this live in a hanging basket? Thank you!!!
Asked by Maddie
Verified Reply - AngelaTulips are suggested for USDA Hardiness Zones 3-8 because of the chilling hours required for the bulbs to produce flowers. You can pre-chill bulbs and plant them as annuals. You could also dig them up every fall and store/chill them again. Was this answer helpful to you
