Toad Trillium (Trillium sessile)

Toad Trillium (Trillium sessile)

A charming addition to shady spaces or sun-dappled gardens, Toad Trillium, also known as Trillium sessile, produces small tri-petaled blooms in a range of hues from dark red to maroon to brownish-purple. The little flowers pop against highly ornamental mottled foliage, giving the entire area a dynamic look sure to please. Plant in groups under deciduous trees or between evergreen shrubs to brighten up the scene with color and light. Blooms appear from April to May in zones 4-8. Butterflies love this low-growing perennial and will visit the landscape often. Trillium is a wildflower native to the U.S. and grows quite readily and dependably.

Growing Tips

  • Planting Instructions:

Best grown in a moist shady woodland garden setting. Plant so that the top of the root (sprout) is 1" below the soil line. Firm soil and water well.
  • Soil Moisture:

Moist, well-drained, deeply organic soil is best.
  • Will Tolerate:

Acidic Soil, Clay Soil, Loamy Soil, Sandy Soil
  • Pruning Instructions:

None. Picking a trillium flower does not kill the plant but damage will result if the green leaves are taken as well. The leaves are needed to provide nutrients for the plants to survive.
  • Winter Care:

Mulch in late fall for added winter protection.
  • Planting Depth:

Plant so that the top of the root (sprout) is 1" below the soil line.
  • Watering Requirements:

Keep soil moist in the spring-early summer. Plants may go dormant prematurely if the soil dries out and this has a negative effect on flowering next year.
  • Fertilization Requirements:

When grown in organically rich soil, fertilizing is normally not needed. To promote flowering fertilizer can be given in early spring.
