Snowdrops are the first sign of spring! Always lay down chicken wire in the fall to protect bulbs. Squirrels and chipmunks love to relocate them.

Beautiful Flowers

By Stephan Richter

From Maynard, MA

I grew up with lots of snow drops everywhere in Germany and was really missing them in the US. I was so happy when I found them here last fall. All 100 bulbs sprouted (if I counted correctly) and most bloomed. We had some harsh frosts that killed a few that were just about to bloom.

Q
After blooming, can tops be cut down and annual plants planted on top?
Asked by Cary
Verified Reply - AngelaSnowdrop bulbs will be close to the surface and you will need to be careful not to dig them up. Planting annuals from seed is a way to avoid that problem. I like Sweet Alyssum and it will often self seed on it's own. If you plant the Snowdrops in clumps and have them marked, you can dig between and plant mature annuals. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Hello, I planted these last year. Followed instructions of how to plant. They are only 2 inches tall with a very tiny bloom. What happened?
Asked by Ann
Verified Reply - AngelaIt sounds like they didn't receive enough chill hours. If you had a very mild winter and early spring warm up, it can cause the plants to be shorter. Be sure to allow the foliage to die back naturally rather than mowing. You may also want to give them a little fertilizer once the flowering is complete. Any balanced fertilizer will work.
