Q
I'm ordering tulips and irises from you, but we have a problem with squirrels sometimes digging up the bulbs. Would it be OK to put chicken wire around them when planting?
Asked by William
Verified Reply - AngelaMany gardeners protect their tulip and crocus bulbs with chicken wire or hardware cloth. You don't want the below ground wire touching or encroaching the bulbs. On the top, simply place a separate "lid" that is secured down with landscape pins. You can remove this in the spring. There are also Bulb Baskets that are made for this purpose. Critters never ever bother my bearded irises. They are planted shallow and the chicken wire might not work well with them. I really don't think you will need it for the German Bearded Irises. Good Luck!!Was this answer helpful to you
