Astilbe Ice Cream

Astilbe Ice Cream

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Recently introduced, this new free-flowering astilbe is a real treat for shady spaces. Ice Cream bestows plentiful, large plumes of fluffy florets in various shades of luscious pink. This luxuriant display of both hue and form adds a pretty bit of color and beauty to the often neglected, darkened corners of the landscape. Not just relegated to the beds and borders, Ice Cream's flower plumes make unique fresh arrangements, too. Plus, the dark foliage remains attractive even after the flowers are spent. For best results, plant this shade lover in regular to moist soil.

Gorgeous and grow quickly

Submitted 4 years ago

By Lynn in zone 7b

From mid-NC

We live in zone 7b and I planted these in the spring (mid-March) in a shady area. Being a new gardner, I wasn't sure if they would grow because there wasn't much to them. Wow, I was surprised. They grow very quickly and the "flowers" have opened this week (5/20). They're just beautiful. This was a great purchase and I highly recommend this plant.

Plants arrived awesomely

By Lynn in NC

From NC

I live in central NC (zone 7) and planted these in the shade. They are growing beautifully and I think they're starting to get flower buds already (I probably planted them as bare root about 5-6 weeks ago). They are now about 6 In H x 6 in W. I am looking forward to seeing how lovely they will turn out. They are in a raised flower bed filled with new garden soil.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Q
Hi! I live on Long Island (Nassau County) in the state of New York and was wondering what zone I live in? My zone used to be 8 but over the years I've been informed I'm now in zone 7B! I'd like your opinion as I would like to order the Ice Cream Astilbe for my garden. Also please advise when I should do the planting. Thank you!
Asked by Ker
Verified Reply - AngelaBased on your zip code, you are gardening in USDA Hardiness Zone 7b. The Astilbe Ice Cream plants should perform well in your area. You can plant them as soon as your soil is workable in the spring. There is no need to wait for the last frost date. Just be sure to keep the soil moist, not soggy, for the first few weeks after planting. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
what zone is this plant appropriate?
Asked by Jan
Verified Reply - AngelaWe suggest Astilbe Ice Cream for USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8.Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I live in Massachusetts, north of Boston. If I plant the Astilbe this week how long will it take to reach its full height? How far apart should I plant each root?
Asked by Maria
Verified Reply - ViciAstilbe can take 3 - 4 years to reach its mature height. It needs to develop a new root system before the plant can flourish. The first year it sleeps, the second year it creeps and the third year it leaps! You want to plant them 18 - 24 inches apart. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I purchased 5 bare roots and all are doing well. They were planted in mid- to late April. Will they bloom the first year?
Asked by Katie
Verified Reply - AngelaAstilbe often blooms the first year planted unlike many perennials. If it doesn't, it should definitely bloom by the second year. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
When is the recommended time to plant for sone 5b/6a? Do they come as bulbs?
Asked by Robin
Verified Reply - AngelaAstilbe Ice Cream should be planted when it arrives this spring. They are shipped as dormant bareroot plants. There is no need to wait for the last frost date to put them in the groundWas this answer helpful to you
Q
I live in 9A, Saint Augustine FL. I have 3 huge oak trees in my back yard, and need to know if these would survive in 9A? I really need more color in the summer months. I have a lot of azaleas that give me color in early spring..
Asked by jeanna
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Astilbe Ice Cream is suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 4 to 8. I'm afraid it's a bit too hot for them to perform well in zone 9. I would suggest Heuchera or Coral Bells. This shade plant has colorful foliage all growing season and is likely evergreen in your area. They also get pretty delicate little flowers in the summer. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Are the astilbes potted or bare root? I have had bad luck with bare roots and don't want to buy those.
Asked by Nanc
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Astilbe Ice Cream is shipped as a bareroot plant. Here's a link to some information about dormant and bareroot plants. It might help change your mind. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/dormant-plantsWas this answer helpful to you
Q
I bought these astilbes this past spring 2022. Unfortunately, I forgot about them, and they have been in the refrigerator since. The roots still look plump. Can I plant these this fall? Or are these a lost cause?
Asked by Chani
Verified Reply - ViciYou could give it a try. It is difficult to say if they are viable or not. They could very well grow. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
How long do they bloom
Asked by Kathy
Verified Reply - ViciThe bloomtime for this plant is August through September for several weeks. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I planted these in the wrong location, are they hardy enough to survive being uprooted and planted elsewhere? Would it be better to replant quickly (they've been in-ground about a week) or wait until they get more established and stronger?
Asked by Sonja
Verified Reply - AngelaI would go ahead an move the Astilbe plants now. Just take as much of the dirt around the root ball as possible. Was this answer helpful to you
