Mayflowering Tulip Menton

Mayflowering Tulip Menton

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
A generous planting of this late-blooming beauty extends the tulip season in your customer's or client's garden. Menton is a Mayflowering type that boasts a classic egg-shaped tulip form and a color palette that changes depending on where it is located in the landscape. Yes… you read that right! Menton produces rosy pink tulips in shady sites and apricot-rose blooms in sunny areas. With the right planting strategy, this gives gardeners two distinct colors in one unique tulip. Flowers emerge in May—quite late for tulips—filling in the space between the spring bulbs and that time when the summer perennials begin to emerge.

My new go-to variety!

These tulips are sensational! They came up in droves and filled our landscape and pots with gorgeous color for weeks. I did a slightly staggered planting so not all came up at the same time and it extended the show. Apparently the neighbors and even strangers loved the display as I'd often see folks stopped in front of the garden taking photos and selfies! In my climate it's unlikely they'll come back, but I'll leave them in and add more next year. This is my go-to tulip variety for sure!

Gorgeous, tall tulips with multicolored petals. These bloom later and I planted them in partial shade. They did great, blooms lasted for weeks, and they made a great statement!

Beautiful but not the color I hoped for

Submitted 5 years ago

By Liza

From Des Moines IA

I planted 100 of these bulbs on the sunny side of my yard, hoping for the beautiful apricot color shown. The bulbs produced wonderfully and have been long-lasting. However, I think they're more sensitive to sunlight than I expected. We had several cloudy days as they began to show color, and I'm wondering if that was enough to keep the petals pink. They're like a bunch of barbie lipsticks standing in my yard! I'm curious to see how they turn out their second year.

Merchant Response

Thank you for your feedback, Liza. The Menton Tulip's color palette changes depending on where it is located in the landscape. It produces rosy pink tulips in shady sites and apricot-rose blooms in sunny areas. We hope this information helps.

Questions & Answers

Q&A

Showing 4 out of 4 Questions

Q
I see that the tulip is hardy in my zone (6) but as I'm reading through the questions (maybe I don't quite understand the verbiage) they seem to suggest that not only will they not naturalize they won't perennial-ize either? I'm confused as to what perennial-ize means if they are hardy to my zone and they tolerate soils as listed (which are also similar to those in my zone). Can you please elaborate?
Asked by Samantha
Verified Reply - AngelaAll tulips are technically perennial in colder growing zones. However, many will only come back under ideal growing conditions that aren't common in our gardens. If you want to encourage them to come back, allow the foliage to die back naturally, fertilize in spring and again after blooming and keep the site as dry as possible during the summer dormant period. Some gardeners will dig up their tulips after they have gone dormant in summer and store the bulbs in a cool and dry location and plant them again in the fall. There are also some varieties of tulips that are reliably perennial in the ground such as Darwin Hybrids. Was this answer helpful to you
