From Longmont Colorado USA

I was very excited when my Scarlet Begonia tubers arrived, they were HUGE like 4-5" across and very firm and well-packed in fresh peat in the bags. I planted them in hanging baskets with very well-draining garden topsoil 1/3 mixed with my favorite mulch of cow manure mulch 1/3 and cocoa bean shell mulch 1/3. The ones that sprouted and flourished were awesome, but that was only about half of them. Customer service was very good and sent replacements for the ones that didn't grow, but when the replacements arrived they were tiny (6cm) and dry and hard as a rock and didn't even sprout. Plus the ones that grew the year before didn't grow when I replanted them after winter in my basement. Now I have thirty baskets and nothing to plant in them this year :-(

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend to a friend

The bulbs sprouted in May, but two months later in July, they were dead. When I dug the bulbs for storage, they were mush.

I had planted 2 baskets with 3 bulbs each and only 1 basket flourished and bloomed nicely. The other one never really took off. All feeding and watering were the same. I had also planted in ground at 5 different locations in well-drained, mostly shady soil. Only 1 grew and bloomed, but the others never got more than a few inches in height. I will need to get the bulbs out and see how next year goes.

Asked by richard
Verified Reply - AngelaYou can plant more than one Begonia bulb in a container. Just make sure they aren't touching one another. You can plant two or three bulbs in a 12 inch diameter pot.Was this answer helpful to you

Q
Is this a perennial?
Asked by Barb
Verified Reply - ViciThis is a tender bulb that needs to be dug up and stored for the winter in a cool dry place. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
How many bulbs do you put in one hanging basket typically? 2 or 3 or does it take all five to make it look full?
Asked by Suebee
Verified Reply - KimberlyThree in each hanging basket should be sufficient for good coverage. Take care to plant them a few inches back from the edge (even though you'll eventually want them to spill over) as the plant can get very top-heavy and will be better supported if halfway between the edge and the center of the pot. Be patient, they'll look puny when they first emerge, but they grow quickly when happy. Was this answer helpful to you
