Gorgeous Giant Flowers

Beautiful large flowers - almost as big as my head (!) Each plant produced 15-25 buds, but most did not open before the first frost. The ones that did were gorgeous. I am in Zone 5, and I planted them indoors April 1. It took 6 - 8 weeks for the stems to sprout up, and I planted them outside on May 15. The first buds appeared in early August and the first blooms in mid-August. I was surprised that I didn't have a plant with multiple mature blooms; instead, buds opened one at a time so that there were always 2 or 3 flowers open. Next year I will start them indoors earlier in hopes of starting the blooming season earlier.

True to the advertising, the foliage/growth is impressive (7ft). The blooms are BIG and stems strong. Not my favorite for cutting, but impressive for viewing in the garden.

Spectacular, late bloom

Order shipped later than other years so I couldn't start the dahlias indoor early like I usually do, and many of the tubers were damaged. Emory Paul tubers took longer than others to sprout, and only three sprouted, I planted one in the front garder and two in my backyard garden; one of the backyard plants didn't grow well. The one the front bloomed first and the one in the back with more direct sun bloomed about a week later. These were the last of my dahlia varieties to bloom and only produced a couple of flowers per plant. Despite the issues I'm giving a 5 because this variety is the most spectacular that I've grown thus far. The size and color are WOW. Color is more vibrant than the online photos. The flower stem is strong and holds the bloom upright. This is a must have for anyone who loves BIG dahlias. It is a good cut flower also. I'm hoping that the tubers overwinter well and result in a more mature and floriferous plant next season.

I ordered dahlias from a place and they were pathetic. The tuber didn't even had an eye or bud. It never bloomed. Do you send a decent tuber and will I have flowers?
Asked by Barb

Q
Is this an annual
Asked by Ron
Verified Reply - AngelaDahlias are frost tender perennials. They can be grown in all zones but those in zones 3 to 8 will need to dig up the tubers and store them in a frost free location for winter. They can be planted again the following spring. Some gardeners will grow them as annuals rather than digging up the tubers. Was this answer helpful to you
