Cinnamon Fern

Cinnamon Fern

100%
of respondents would recommend this to a friend
Showy perennial features handsome, deep green, waxy fronds that add color and texture to the garden and cut-flower arrangements. Separate, spore-bearing, stiff fronds in the plant's center add to its appeal. Cinnamon Fern (Osmunda cinnamonea) grows 24-36" tall, but can grow taller with constant moisture. An easy-care, native perennial, Cinnamon Fern thrives in either wet, swampy areas or dry, shady spots. It's ideal for shade gardens, woodlands and native plant gardens. Rarely bothered by insect pests or disease, it's one of the easiest shade perennials to grow. Deer tend to avoid ferns.

As an owner of a retail nursery here in Oregon, I would definitely recommend K.Van. K.Van is my "go-to" supplier for viable and healthy plants with a high rate of germination and yield rate. I've ordered from them for the past 5 years and will continue to do so.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Awesome!

I was very happy with my purchase. I ordered a total of 50 cinnamon ferns and most, if not all, were already starting to sprout when I took them out of their bag. Before planting, I soaked for about an hour or so. When planting, I used soil from under lawn clippings and leaves I had behind my house. For a small portion of ferns, I used peat moss and they're growing much faster than those in the soil. I also had a few ferns I left in the water I used for soaking…they are growing at the same rate as those in the peat moss. Overall, I planted them about 1-1/2 weeks ago and some are 3-6" tall. Now if I can get the chipmunks from digging them up I will be in good shape.

Beautiful!

Bought 2 of these last year (2020), and they are coming up beautifully again this year. :) Thank You! Everyone says ferns are a real challenge, but I did some reading, and they're doing fine. I found mulching them with oak leaves, and thin branches, cut up into short pieces works well. As in the woods, I try to disturb the area as little as possible. And I also have a crew of worms doing a fantastic job. :) Best advice I've read: "Be patient, like a forest, they take time to grow"..

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Q
Will this Fern thrive as a container plant? Will it survive winter temps that get down to 15 degrees during the night? How does it handle 1 to 2 feet of snowfall?
Asked by Donna
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Cinnamon Fern is suited for USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 8. It will go dormant in winter and new foliage emerges in the spring. It is very cold hardy if planted in the ground. You can grow it in a container but should move the pot to an unheated garage or basement for winter protection. Potted plants don't have the same root insulation as those planted in the ground.
