Container gardens can be moved around the property to be enjoyed from many angles and locales. Depending on which plants are selected for the container garden, they may also be moved indoors to overwinter as a houseplant. Below you will find a wide range of bulbs, perennials, and plants that were specially chosen to perform in container gardens.
Container Gardening
If you have been asking for a new way to display your favorite perennials, bulbs, and annuals, try a mixed container garden! They are great to showcase several unique and beautiful plant varieties at once, or to highlight a simple single-variety exhibit. We suggest pairing tall and short plants, mixing textures, or creating a complementary color palette for the best results in your container garden.
How Do You Plant Flowers in Pots?
To plant flowers in pots, start by selecting a pot that is appropriate for the size of the plant you want to grow. Make sure the pot has drainage holes at the bottom to prevent waterlogging. Fill the pot with a well-draining potting mix. Position the bulbs, tubers, or bareroots at the recommended depth and spacing. Add more potting mix around it to gently secure the plant in place. Water well once, and then water sparingly until top growth appears.
How Often Should You Water Flowers in Pots?
The frequency of watering flowers in pots depends on several factors, including the type of plant, pot size, weather conditions, and the potting mix used. As a general rule, it's important to check the moisture level of the soil before watering. Stick your finger about an inch deep into the soil, and if it feels dry at that depth, it's time to water. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot and other plant health issues. Instead, aim for deep watering sessions that thoroughly moisten the entire root ball. Water the plant until you see water flowing out of the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot, ensuring that the roots receive enough hydration.
How Do I Repot Flowers in Pots?
When it's time to repot your flowers, start by selecting a larger pot that provides enough room for the plant's roots to grow. Fill the new pot with fresh potting mix, leaving enough space at the top to accommodate the root ball. Carefully remove the plant from its current pot, gently loosening the roots with your fingers or a small tool if they are tightly bound. Place the plant in the new pot, ensuring that it sits at the same depth as it did in the previous container. Fill the remaining space around the root ball with more potting mix, gently pressing it down to secure the plant in place. Water the flower container and place the pot in an appropriate place with enough sunlight.
