Fritillaria Bulbs for Sale from K. van Bourgondien
Fritillaria are known for their beautiful bell-shaped flower that faces downward as well as a pungent, musky odor that repels unwanted critters and animals. They make a wonderful addition to your spring garden because of their bright and brilliant hues. K. van Bourgondien is trusted by gardeners because of our experience and expertise. We ensure that our customers receive top-quality flower bulbs.
These plants vary greatly in size: crown imperials can grow up to four feet while Guinea Hen Flowers remain low growing. The foliage is usually slender and lance-shaped, arranged alternately on the stem. The flowers emerge in spring, adding an exotic touch to gardens with their unusual and captivating forms.
Planting Fritillaria
Planting fritillaria bulbs is best done in the fall, allowing them to establish roots before winter sets in. The bulbs should be planted at a depth of about 3 to 6 inches, depending on the size of the bulb, with the pointed end facing upwards. It's recommended to add a layer of fertilizer at the base of the planting hole to improve drainage and prevent bulb rot, a common issue for these plants.
Space the bulbs about 4 to 8 inches apart to give them room to grow and multiply over time. After planting, water the bulbs well to settle the soil around them, but avoid overwatering, as this can lead to fungal issues.
Once planted, fritillaria bulbs require minimal maintenance. Mulching around the base can help retain moisture and suppress weeds, and deadheading spent flowers can encourage the plants to conserve energy for the next blooming season.
Planting Fritillaria bulbs varies slightly, depending on the type you're planting.
Fritillaria imperialis (Crown Imperial)—Plant these fritillaria bulbs in light shade about 5-6" deep and 8" apart. Fritillaria meleagris likes moist soil, rich in organic matter and can handle being planted in areas with poor drainage.
Fritillaria meleagris (Guinea Hen Flower)—Plant in light shade about 3-4" deep and 3-4" apart in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter.
Fritillaria michailovskyi (Michael's Flower)—Plant in full sun to partial shade about 4" deep and 2-3" apart in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter.
Fritillaria persica (Persian Bell)—Plant in full sun to partial shade about 6-8" deep and 6-8" apart in well-drained soil, enriched with organic matter.
