I am still a newbie when it comes to growing dahlias. I still have so much to learn!! BUT, I feel like they are worth all the effort!! Here are a couple of things I learned this year: ** 1) When planting dahlias, don’t water them until they start showing above ground growth. Who knew?🤷‍♀️ 2) I think staking the individual dahlias would work best for me. I tried corralling them..but some still toppled over. 3) Label...Label...Label!!! I used a pen that worked great!...But, I used a small wooden stake as a label. After several weeks out in the weather, the layers of wood started peeling off. So, I’ll make sure to use a good pen AND a sturdier label next year. 4) Where to make the cut... I don’t think I am cutting deep enough on some of the varieties. If you don’t cut deep enough into the plant, the later bloom stems end up being weak. 5) I need to relocate mine to an area that has good sun until at least early afternoon. Right now I have mine planted in an area that is pretty shaded until around 11:00am...then full sun. I need to flip that!...I feel like early morning sun with some late afternoon shade would be best here in our hot, humid climate. 6) Disbudding...I am taking all of the extra buds off of each stem just as they appear, leaving only the main bud to bloom. ** So, what do you think? Do you have any tips for me? I am determined to learn how to do a better job of growing these! ** ** Pictured here is Cafe au’ Lait Royal from kvanbourgondien . They are definitely one of my favorites! ** If you want to learn more about dahlias, I recommend following swanislanddahlias and santacruzdahlias !! Both are so knowledgeable and are SO generous about sharing that knowledge with all of us! So, thank you to both of them!
