A whimsical sight in the mid spring garden, Party Balloons Allium bears nearly perfect orbs of pretty, pinkish-purple florets. The flower heads grow to an impressive 8" wide and, as their name suggests, closely resemble festive balloons atop tall, straight stems. Plant Party Balloons in groups for an even more cheerful garden display. As an added bonus, Party Balloons has been known to sometimes produce two flowers from a single bulb. Expect a unique and very merry garden presentation from May to June. Plant bulbs in a well-drained site that gets full sun for best results. Bulb size: 18-20 cm.

Looking forward to seeing them grow

They are not deer resistant in the Adirondack Mountains, so sad to see the deer devour them up. Hopefully next year they will leave them alone.

Four out of five came up this spring. None of them were higher than 8 inches with a single flower ball of about 4". Hopefully, it will do better next spring.

I planted my 5 bulbs around each other so that they would make a display like the one in the picture. The leaves came up and partly died, and the blooms came up. Some died before opening, the others were about 5 inches tall and 2 inches in diameter. All my other alliums shot up and bloomed as normal, and blocked the view of these. They died the day after they opened. I pulled out the bulbs and am replacing them with other alliums.

Beautiful!

I do wonder if the climate has a lot to do with how well these do, as I'm noting some of the more negative reviews are from regions out of the midwest, which has particularly harsh winters and also hot summers. I planted these in fall, and when Spring came they grew quite large with magnificent blooms. I will leave them for next year now that they are dying off, in hopes that they will bloom again.

I bought 5 of these and they all came up and were healthy and interesting. Not near as bright as the picture in the catalog, which was a bit disappointing.

Really disappointing. I think I planted 3-5 of these, and only one grew, and it was super feeble and hardly any bloom. I had followed all instructions for planting and watering so very surprised.

Flowers are much smaller than shown.

I bought these bulbs to have aliums with shorter stems and fuller blooms. They are only slightly shorter than average, and the blooms are between 2-3 inches wide.

I just planted these Party Balloon bulbs, and I was amazed by how healthy and HUGE they were. I am looking forward to spring when they bloom. If they are as beautiful as they look in the photos, I will add more next year.

Q
I purchased and received (Oct '21) "Party Balloon" allium to plant in patio pots. Can I plant them in pots this fall to be kept outdoors thru the winter? I live in northern Indiana, zone 5. Or should the pots be kept in my garage where the winter temperature ranges in the 40's - 50's, never freezing? How much watering would be required?
Asked by Sasmo the Wannabe Gardener
Verified Reply - AngelaI would plant your Allium Party Balloons in pots and leave them outside until the temperatures reaching freezing. Water them in at planting but no other supplemental water should be needed while they are outside. Once you move them into the garage, just water lightly about once a month to keep the soil from drying out completely. You can move them outside in the early spring once the coldest weather has passed. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Most alliums only are designated to a southern zone of 8. Is it correct that Party Balloon allium and Silver Spring are hardy to zone 9 where I am?
Asked by Barb
Verified Reply - AngelaWe are suggesting Allium Party Balloons and Silver Spring for Zone 9. I would suggest chilling these bulbs for 8-12 weeks prior to planting for the best results. Was this answer helpful to you
