Choosing the Right Asiatic Lily Varieties
When selecting Asiatic lily bulbs for sale, first consider your space. Most Asiatic lilies grow well in zones 3-8. Depending on the variety, their height can vary. While many Asiatic lily varieties grow 3-4' tall, dwarf and border lilies only grow 2' tall. The shorter varieties are excellent for planting near walkways and the fronts of flower beds while taller varieties are usually planted behind shorter growing annuals and perennials. Asiatic lily flowers look best when planted in groups. Use our plant calculator to determine how many bulbs to buy. Finally consider the flower color. K. van Bourgondien offers a range of color choices as well as mixes.
Asiatic Lily Care - FAQs
Caring for your Asiatic lilies is relatively simple. The key to growing a gorgeous display of Asiatic lily flowers is planting them in well-drained soil and ideally in a location that receives 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily. For the best performance, we recommend fertilizing Asiatic lilies with Van Bourgondien 100% Natural Bulb Food in the spring.
How to Plant Asiatic Lilies
Asiatic lily bulbs can be planted in the spring or the fall. Before planting, mix compost into the soil to improve its drainage and structure. Plant Asiatic lily bulbs 6-8 inches deep and about 5-7 inches apart. Water well. Mulch can suppress weeds and retain moisture in the soil. For more information, visit our guide on how to grow lilies.
When do Asiatic Lilies Bloom?
Asiatic lilies bloom early in the summer, often beginning around mid to late May, and will usually continue to bloom throughout the summer. These lilies are early bloomers compared to its sister variety, the Oriental Lily, which blooms in late summer around August. Plant both lily varieties and enjoy their blooms all summer long.
Do Asiatic Lily Flowers Come Back Year After Year?
Asiatic lilies grow back year after year. Just make sure they are planted in a sunny, location, with well-drained soil, and in zones 3 through 8. After blooming, allow the foliage to fade naturally. The dead stalks can be cut down in late fall.
