Beautiful, but didn't bloom as well the second year

Submitted 1 year ago

By Flower maximalist

From Zone 7a

These bloomed so well the first year that I planted another 200 last fall to continue the line of crocuses along the edge of my lawn. I noticed a much higher bloom rate (nearly all) among the newly planted bulbs as compared to the ones in their second year (only ~70% had flowers, with the rest being only foliage). I was a bit disappointed, since I had let the foliage die back completely before mowing to make sure the bulbs had enough energy for the following year. Comparing the color distribution from this year versus last year, I believe that most of the ones that failed to bloom were the "Grand Maitre" pale lavender variety. #sweepstakes

Came through despite screw ups

I had a series of health problems, so mistakes were made (timing wise). These came up anyway. I did get one random orange, but I think I'll keep it in another area.

Beautiful! High bloom rate!

Nearly all 200 I planted came up and bloomed despite some early rabbit nibbling - fixed that with spray! Love the deep purple 'Flower Record' and striped 'Pickwick' in particular.

Most are missing their leaf tops due to rabbit nibbling, but they still came up anyway!

Unfortunately, not all of the crocus bloomed and those that did were soon eaten by rabbits. Very disappointing overall, but not necessarily VanBourgondien,s problem.

They bloomed very well, and brightened up an area that doesn't have blooming plants until later in the season. I plan to buy more!
