All the begonia bulbs woke and have grown beautiful

Submitted 3 years ago

By Ricka Shay

From Upstate NY

Experienced gardener. This is my second time ordering begonia bulbs. The first year I watered them too much and the bulbs rotted. This year, the company advised to water once then stop until the bulbs start to produce leaves. I barely covered the bulbs with soil so that I could feel the top of the bulb. I did not use any fertilizer until the leaves were of significant size.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend to a friend

Of the pack of begonia corms I received, 1 out of the 5 was not very viable and did not sprout. Only 3 made it to maturity. I have ordered these in the past with successful results but these did not do as well.

Last year I ordered 50 begonia bulbs & only 4 plants bloomed. This year I thought I would try again & ordered 50 more plants. Not one of them bloomed. I will not be ordering from this company again. I am a Master gardener not a novice & I have grown begonias from other companies quite easily.

Merchant Response

Thank you for sharing your review with us. We were sorry to hear of your two seasons planting of Fragrant Double Begonia Odorosa and them not blooming as expected. Two reasons Begonias may not bloom is they are not getting enough sunlight or they have too much nitrogen. We are delighted to let you know we guarantee our merchandise and we will be reaching out to you with a positive resolution.

Q
We are looking for hanging hummingbird plants
Asked by Daydoe
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Fragrant Double Begonia Odorosa is a good choice. The Skaugum Begonia is a winner for hummingbirds as well. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
I read something that said about winter storage, " Fibrous types can be kept as a houseplant, while tuberous varieties should be stored dormant". Are the Frangrant Double Begonia Odorosa considered fibrous or tuberous? I'd like to store them in their pots this winter. What storage temperature is recommended?
Asked by Midwest
Verified Reply - ViciThis is a tuberous begonia. The ideal location for winter storage is cool, but not cold, between 40 and 55 °F. If you choose to store them in their pots simply stop watering them and then put them in storage for the winter. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Is this a perennial?
Asked by Alan
Verified Reply - AngelaThe Begonia Odorosa is a tender bulb and only winter hardy in zones 9 and 10. It can be grown in USDA Hardiness Zones 3 to 10. Those in zones 3 to 8 will need to lift the bulbs from the ground in the fall and store them in a frost free location for winter. They can be planted again in the spring. Some gardeners just grow them as annuals. Was this answer helpful to you
Q
Should I let the frost 'kill' the foliage before digging them up to winter? What is the handling/growing instructions FOR DUMMIES. Lol! I'm not really a dummy but I tend to try to keep things 'alive' too long instead of letting them become dormant. That is what I need help with. Also, are there any books or reference materials that you would recommend for a mostly shade highly sloped yard in central Kentucky with loamy but high rock content soil.with great drainage? Thank you!
Asked by Kim
Verified Reply - AngelaYou can allow your Begonias to be touched by light frost before digging them up. Leave a small amount of soil around each tuber. Cut off the stems about 1 inch above the tubers. Place the tubers in a cool, dry area to cure for 2 to 3 weeks. After curing, shake off the remaining soil, then bury the tubers in dry peat moss, vermiculite, or sawdust. Store the tubers in an area with a temperature of 40 to 50ºF. Do not allow the tubers to freeze. We offer many options for color in a shade garden. Most of them will perform well on a slope with proper watering while they are getting established. https://www.dutchbulbs.com/search?keyword=shade#/filter:filter_usage:Shade$2520Garden/filter:filter_usage:Drought$2520Tolerant/filter:ss_sun_exposure:Full$2520ShadeWas this answer helpful to you
